Is Maureen Dowd Necessary?

I have avoided this moment like the plague but can contain myself no longer – I must actually put ‘pen to paper’ and expend valuable time writing about the vile “McDowd,” as Senator Obama likes to call her.

Her tasteless column in the New York Times Wednesday further demonstrates that ‘the paper of record’ is now a biased rag, sponsoring baseless trash both above and below the fold. Her column is her opinion. Fine. Voicing opinion is one thing. Depraved character assassination is quite another.

I guess all it takes is for Obama to flirt with Mo, no, not that Mo, on the plane and mention how much he liked her boots (yes, he really did that) for her to sell herself out and spend endless copy trashing Senator Clinton mercilessly.

Witnessing the horrid misogyny and media bias the past seven months is made even more painful when these kinds of attacks come from another woman. Think women can’t be guilty of misogyny? Think again. I have a theory that women who engage in this sort of behavior do so either out of self-loathing, envy or…self-preservation.

They do not want to upset the status quo that has allowed them to succeed in a man’s world, so they bond with the male offender. ‘See – I will hate Hillary, just like you. I’m not that ambitious. I don’t want to be that successful. I will help you degrade her so that you don’t notice me standing here, successful, too.’

Or, perhaps Ms. Dowd, who very obviously has a need to be babe-alicious (just look at her NYT photo), believes that her siding with a woman who possesses the ultimate ambition – to be President of the United States – would forever deprive Maureen of getting a date on Saturday night.

We can look at Ms. Dowd’s 2005 book, Are Men Necessary, to help clarify her conundrum. According to CNN:

In the book she wonders about the state of feminism, the value in pursuing a mate, the belief that smart women get left home on Saturday nights and whether women’s magazines have given up thoughtful articles for beauty tips and empty sexuality.

I actually made it through about three quarters of this tiresome tome before I decided to mail it back to her publishers and tell them I no longer wanted to own it. She theorizes that feminists of the 70’s finally got what they wanted – equal rights and careers – and found out they didn’t want what they got.

Oversimplification, anyone? Or perhaps she is talking about herself…She makes almost constant reference to the fact that if you want to nab a man you’d better have long hair and you’d better not be ‘sarcastic.’

“As Dowd would have it, men simply find her intelligence, her status, her wit too daunting,” wrote Katie Roiphe in Slate. “But is it possible that there is something else at play? … [A New York magazine] piece … describes the wide variety of men Dowd has been involved with, ranging from movie stars, to important editors, to creators of television dramas. … One imagines that her intelligence, her sharpness, her sarcasm may even have interested these men. Could there possibly be another reason that the attractive, successful Dowd has not settled down?”

I have an answer for that. Could it be that she always looks like she smells poo-poo?

Have you ever watched this woman on a talk show? I am not criticizing her looks – and would never do so – only her expression. She exudes a snobby, aloof, lemon-sucking air, as if to say, ‘the coolest comments to hit the atmosphere only emanate from moi.’ Smirking, she almost imperceptibly tips her head to and fro as she holds forth, reminiscent of Lily Tomlin as Ernestine, the telephone operator, snorting ‘one ringy dingy, two ringy dingy.’

According to Dowd:

“[The book] isn’t at all pessimistic about the chances of strong, successful women,” she said. “… but a lot of times I think it’s turned out that men find those things draining and oftentimes would rather be with a woman who is in awe of them.”

Perhaps she is referring to Obama. Clearly utter adulation is what he expects and the only thing his fragile ego can tolerate. This must be why he wants his boot on Hillary’s throat – that 60 year old ‘witch’ had the audacity not to lie down when he and the clueless power players at the DNC told her to!

This may come as a shock to Ms. Dowd, but there are kind, progressive and fabulous men out there who thrill at the idea of a partner who is exceedingly capable, has an opinion, wit and a sense of humor – and they don’t give a rosy red damn whether her hair is long or not. To those of you guys out there – I applaud you.

In fact, many of these men likewise support Hillary Clinton. Gee, big surprise.

Dowd’s jealous behavior toward the accomplished Hillary is all the more surprising given this statement in her book:

“Men are simply not biologically suited to hold higher office. The Bush administration has proved that once and for all.”

Hmmm. But Hillary – no dice, huh? Why? Well, here’s a theory someone offered:

Maureen can’t live without the Clintons. She’s the one who drags them back into her columns because of her self-loathing, envy and frustration. Obama has become a figment of her fevered imagination, existing only as someone to smite the Clintons or be their plaything. If he does not batter, smear or suppress the Clintons, Dowd stamps her feet and hurls epithets at “Obambi.” No man is man enough for her. Except Bill, her not so secret obsession. Her jealousy of Hillary as a result knows no bounds. It must be misery to be Maureen, hunting the Clintons as their stalker.

That says it all. An obsession. McDowd makes this ridiculous statement in her column:

Now they’ve made Barry’s convention all about them — their dissatisfaction and revisionism and barely disguised desire to see him fail. Whatever insincere words of support the Clintons muster, their primal scream gets louder: He can’t win! He can’t close the deal! We told you so!

No. He can’t win. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is not the fault of either Hillary or Bill Clinton. And why is it “Barry’s convention?” Since when is he the only member of the Democratic Party? Meanwhile, Hillary, the far stronger candidate who bowed out ‘for the good of the party,’ acquiescing to who knows what sort of pressure, has Ms. Dowd demanding that she continue to ‘mother’ Obambi and drag his behind across the finish line.

Dowd acknowledges the DNC’s buyers’ remorse with Obama but once again blames Hillary. Dowd ignores the salient point – the DNC elites were so busy protecting their own fiefdoms, yearning for a neophyte “delegater” they thought they could control, that they didn’t stop long enough to appreciate the great candidate they were kicking to the curb.

The Clintons get blamed for everything wrong with the Democratic Party and the presumptuous nominee? What has any of his endless flip-flopping, inexperience or arrogance to do with Hillary, who has been kind enough to campaign for this vacuous media creation while he takes his family on yet another vacation?

I think it’s awfully nice of Hillary to do anything for a man who has painted her and Bill as racists. Don’t you? The Clintons have done more fund raising, campaigning and heavy lifting for the Democratic Party than anyone and if their intellect and talent is the subject of sour grapes, then the DNC sad sacks need to get themselves to a therapist and work it out.

Dowd blames Hillary’s ‘mismanagement’ in spending so much money on a campaign only to lose – but she didn’t lose – neither of them has enough pledged delegates to claim the nomination. With FL and MI seated in full, as Obama requested, it is practically a tie, with Hillary leading in the popular vote.

Ms. Mo fails to mention that Obama spent twice the money, had the press fawning over him daily, the DNC riding shotgun for him at every turn and still could not close the deal. If not for cowardly super delegates bowing to pressure from the scheming Pelosi, Dean, Reid and Kerry, this would rightfully be decided at the Convention.

What about Obama’s poor management skills? Despite every advantage he can’t lift his flagging, sagging poll numbers and is in a dead heat with McCranky? Why is the more qualified woman once again supposed to acquiesce, lie back and take it, so the less qualified man can have an easier time. Let him get off his arse and earn it. Or is he too busy body surfing?

As to Ms. Dowd’s other point, Hillary Clinton is not “encouraging” her supporters to do anything in particular – now or at the Convention, except asking them to support Obama. Not that the DNC deserves it, but she is a good and loyal Democrat to the core. Her supporters have minds of their own, and they are making their own decisions about what they plan to do. Now and at the Convention. And that includes who we will ultimately vote for in November. Hillary does not and cannot control the voters. We are not the mindless sheep that Obama and Ms. Dowd, apparently, wish us to be.

It is unconscionable to think that Joan of Arc in a pantsuit, the most prepared candidate, with the best, most well thought out policies, persevered against ridiculous odds, and will not even be properly honored at the Convention – and her 18,000,000 voters will likewise be tossed aside like so much garbage – and McDowd thinks Hillary is being ‘selfish?’ Respecting them is just good political sense, Maureen.

What kind of an unmitigated boob does someone have to be not to realize that if you don’t honor Senator Clinton’s historic accomplishments, and her voters – the arrogant Obambi will lose the election in the Fall? He may lose anyway – but continuing to follow Maureen’s prescription of figuratively defecating all over Hillary is as sick as it is sad.

If it is selfish of Hillary to tirelessly stand on flatbed trucks and in town halls across our great nation and take the time to be accountable, and explain the policies she wishes to implement to move this country forward, then pardon my dust, but that’s the kind of ‘selfishness’ I welcome.

Maureen Dowd can only hang her head in shame, if indeed she has any, for wishing to trumpet the efforts of a man of little relative accomplishment (but two memoirs!) over a woman who has fought her entire life for the rights of children, first responders, veterans, women, health care and education.

Finally, no, I don’t believe Maureen Dowd is ‘necessary.’

The sooner she realizes her petty attacks and obsessive harpings only serve to further diminish her in the eyes of all decent and sensible people, the better.

The only question is who is first in line for the guillotine: Dowd, Oprah, or Richard Cohen?

Comment by BernieO | 2008-08-14 15:52:32

Thank you for pointing out that Dowd’s insanity goes back to 2000. In fact, it goes all the way back to the Clinton administration. Too many liberals think she has changed recently because she has trashed Bush, forgetting that she helped get him elected in the first place by giving credibility to the right wing’s smears of Gore and she continued this with Kerry. She seems obsessed with gender issues and loves to paint Dems as girly men. I think this does show a strong streak of self-hatred in this twisted woman. She clearly has a problem with women. That doesn’t seem odd to me - the biggest male chavinist I know is my mother-in-law.

It is time that Democrats - and decent people in general - boycott this fountain of poison. People need to stop reading her, especially online. I am sick of seeing her at the top of the Times’ “Most Emailed” column list. Until that stops, she won’t.

For more Dowd analysis, check out what Bob Somerby has to say about her Irish background contributing to her cynical world view. I, too, am from an Irish Catholic family and think he is on to something. Here is a sample:

She is a self loather; her raison d’etre is to vilify the Clintons; obvious she is jealous, and suffers from an acute and very warped overdose of “old-maid’s ” syndrome.
She is delusional, and much to be pitied. One of the very good reasons to boycott the NYT.
She should be the mistress of Chris Matthews, and be kicked off the bed each morning!

Hmm, I wonder if Dowd will think that “BITCH” and “WHORE” is offensive once it is thrown in her direction and not Hillary’s?

Personally, I think those words to describe any woman is wrong…but I don’t mind calling Maureen a piece of shit, or an asshole. See, those are unisex insults. :)

This column sure is a load of crap. So McDowd can’t attack Clinton because she’s a women? Sounds like Obama. Now if anyone attacks Clinton, she can say, “I don’t look like any of the men on those dollar bills…”

McDowd attacked both candidates equally during the primaries. In fact, she was more harsh on Obama as it dragged on. But now, Clinton is the one trying to divide the party, always making veiled references to Obama’s inexperience, and race-baiting. She deserves criticism, too.

Comment by jh4hill | 2008-08-14 11:51:08

Wow — did you read the columns that Maureen wrote - at every turn she ripped Hillary apart — you are fooling no one with this response.

The only time she was tough on Obambi DURING the primary was when he wasn’t acting like a bulldozer — as this article clearly says.

She can criticize anyone she wants — woman or not. Her behavior goes beyond that — it is denial to pretend otherwise.

Comment by Elizabeth Reilly | 2008-08-14 12:04:31

She so typifies every bad sterotype of the aging spinster, bitter because she’s not married (believe me, there are worse things!!), and angry at successful women who are married and who are successful.

As to applying her vitriol equally to both, I guess anyone thinking that hasn’t been reading her columns with any regularity. She is decidedly and unambiguously anti-Hillary (actually, anti-Clinton, as well).

Take her with a large grain of salt and then forget about her. She’s not worth anyone’s time.

Comment by SBwa | 2008-08-14 12:42:28

I work in the corporate world, and it is common for women executives to be completely sexist and to use a double standard with men and women. For some reason, women are real bitches to each other in the corporate world. Sometimes, I think it is almost like hazing.

Comment by mesofreee | 2008-08-14 13:26:05

they just think the opportunities for women “up there” are few. So they have to keep the other women down in order to secure their own positions. In this way they are complicit in sexist behavior. They are nothing more than sexist-man pleasers.

There are a lot of men who would be very pleased to see more women in the upper echelons of the work force. They are married to ambitious women who probably are faced with sexist women like Dowd and Pelosi who kowtow to the sexist men in order to protect their own asses.

Comment by tzada | 2008-08-14 14:03:10

Having been in the business world, I know exactly what you mean. I have had a woman write letters and sign my name, in an attempt to get me fired.

Woman can be very vindictive, add jealosy in the mix and it is very unattractive. I see the same thing in Nancy Polosi as I see in Maureen Dowd.
What they don’t understand is this, the soul shows in the eyes, and hatred and jealousy show on the face. If they don’t realize, that they are an open book, and their actions transparent, then add dumber than dirt to their resume.

Comment by ritamary | 2008-08-14 15:06:39

I agree Dowd and Pelosi are vindictive and jealous women. They must be the queen bee wherever they are. They cannot bear sharing the spotlight with any other woman. I think this behavior is a result of huge feelings of insecurity. They see a powerful woman like Hillary as the ultimate threat.

Now you say she’s attacking him. Which is it?

You fail at life and logic.

Comment by Trevor the shiny eyed dog back from the Lake | 2008-08-14 21:43:09

Oh what a load of utter garbage you mouth. Hillary got all the criticism anyone ever needed or did not deserve for a lifetime during the primary. Now she is being divisive for the Party? What rock have you been hiding under? It is Hillary that has been hitting the trail campaigning for Obambi, ever since the beginning of June. Even with a massively unpaid campaign debt she is working tirelessly for Mr. Oblome. And you are so grateful to her for doing that you accuse of her of being divisive? You have your head firmly planted… in the sand. If you want to blame someone, blame me and the rest of the PUMA’s who arent going to be satisfied with some patronizing bs about including Hillary’s name in nomination, when they admit that they have already made a decision to nominate Mr. BO. What kind of token bullshit is that? Huh? And you have a reason to come on here and criticize Hillary for things she isnt doing, playing the race card?? No, Mr. Oblome can play that game all by himself with no help from Senators McCain or Clinton. In fact he is a Master Race Card player, whining when it comes back to bite him. If you are so pleased with BO why come here and whine and moan? I really dont see your purpose. The whole issue is so far beyond the potential electability of Hillary or what Hillary advises or suggests for Democrats to do at this point. You are mis-led to be blaming Hillary Clinton for the deepset and unresolved discontent and rage at the Dem machine and media turkey vultures.
Oh and by the way,I will make a non-veiled suggestion that BO has very little experience and what he has is completely laughable. He is a bad joke.

Comment by mom2nomads | 2008-08-14 14:02:15

I think what “strikes a nerve” is to read people who claim to be fighting against sexism in our society calling a woman nasty, sexist, derogatory names.

People can say that Dowd calls other women sexist names, fine, whatever. But that does not mean that it is right to turn around and do the same to her.

How can anyone who calls a woman a “whore” and a “bitch,” (and any other demeaning name I’ve seen in many of these postings) say that they are fighting against sexism in our society? It is flat out hyprocrisy. If one’s point cannot be made without using that kind of sexist language than perhaps it isn’t a point worth making.

Comment by Ani | 2008-08-14 17:32:36

Clearly, I have not used sexist language to describe her.

Unfortunately, we all get angry and when one is forced to listen to that sort of diatribe day in and month out, there is a tendency to get reactive.

Point being, I don’t think Ms. Dowd would enjoy being on the receiving end of the filth she is dishing out.

The names I have heard and read Hillary and her supporters called are so vile I cannot and will not repeat them here.

Comment by Jane | 2008-08-14 21:53:24

She is a symbol of equal rights. Equal rights means being able to be the most talented columnist in the country and also being able to be taken seriously and thus criticized when your wrong.

Pelosi is cut from the same cloth as M.O.

Women ranting on about stronger women being too strong.

I’ve seen it before, women who have trained themselves, or allowed themselves to be trained, to never cross that line, to never push the boundaries.

They don’t even know they are doing it. They are so ggood at never crossing the line, and at trying to stop other women from crossing, they don’t even know it’s there anymore.

I’m glad it brings in to focus a deep seated, subconscious fear women have of being fully functioning memebers of society.

One of Pelosi’s first acts as Madame Speaker - about a week in - was to cut down Jane Harman’s seat as head of a powerful cmte. Harman like Hillary was someone I always eyed as presidential material for her many leadership qualities.
We haven’t heard or seen much of Jane since.

Thank you for reminding us about Jane Harman. Excellent point.

It seems that cannibalism is spreading through the party. Dean and Pelosi’s leadership style is very dysfunctional. They need to resign or be resigned.

Read an article recently reporting that when it came to giving women in Congress financial support this election, Ms. Pelosi gave then much less than the men.

Looks like this Prima Donna wants to keep her female competition down in Congress, don’t you think?

Comment by mesofreee | 2008-08-14 12:59:24

Wow that’s pretty damning alright.

She’s doing her male counterparts job for them. Keeping the women down, so they don’t have to look like misogynists. Fewer legal problems.

I worked in a situation very similar to this. The administation was headed by women, over mostly women (42 of 43). They were more than happy to keep pay down, and to make working conditions less than nice.

During a re-org, the only admin of those 43 to get a promotion was of course the man. The rest had their pay leveled out, their jobs threatened and were subject to old school sexual harrassment. What did the women with the power do? They were the thugs carrying out the dirty work for the men.

That is what Pelosi is doing. Carrying out the dirty work for the men.

How is it that you can accuse a woman who is the first female Speaker of the House of not crossing lines that had not been previously crossed? Or not pushing boundaries? You can agree with what she has done as Speaker or not, but she certainly has not stayed within the lines.

How can you accuse M.O., who is a highly educated, successful, accomplished, self-made woman who rose up from poverty to achieve what she has achieved of not pushing boundaries or crossing lines?

I find it so sad that people who would call themselves feminists will freely and happily demean the accomplishments of other women because they don’t agree with their politics, or with certain decisions, etc.

I am not a Hillary supporter but I would never, ever demean her accomplishments, her intellect, her drive. Why is it that people feel the need to rely on personal attacks in order to prove points? To me that only signifies that any intellectual, fact-based argument you might give is not strong enough, so you have to throw in a little bit of character assassination to top it all off.

Comment by Sue | 2008-08-14 14:49:09

Michelle Obama did not rise up from poverty. Mrs. Obama is from a very middle class black family in Chicago and was the producct of what is referred to as “magnet schools” which were created to bring black and white children together. Mrs. Obama was no more “poor” than her husband who went to the most elite school in Hawaii (after being ditched by his mother - again) Mrs. O’s dad is a big time black politician in Chicago. This woman never wanted for anything - including an ivy league college and law school education - that would be thanks to the efforts of Lyndon Johnson and the former Democratic Party (which no longer exists thanks to her husband - who is not African American.)

POVERTY? Love the fiction these fools spin.

Her FATHER was a party boss, a ward enforcer. They did FINE. City job, they always pay well… the right connections with those crooked politicians, no doubt early pick on whatever fell off the truck. Think Ralphie on the Sopranos. He didn’t sit in the dark for want of money to pay the light bill, either.

BHO probably knew damn well whose daughter he was marrying. Ambitious bastard.

Maybe, just maybe at her next Botox session the needle will slip and hit her mouth.

Comment by TeaMug | 2008-08-14 12:29:16

needle? lol..Pelosi needs one of the huge oil drilling platform drills to fit in her big gob. I heard that Botox is full of pigs fat, fry her lips in the pan and make a bacon sandwich! Thats enough to put me off bacon.

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-08-14 20:15:40

No. Botox is botullism. In large amounts it can kill you, it’s poison. In small amounts it just freezes that muscle so you aren’t using it to make wrinkles.

You might be thinking of that Restalin shit, that they inject to plump up lips and laugh lines.

People should get smart, and have the doc take the fat out of — their OWN asses. That way, when they get a kiss, that person is kissing their ass.

Oh, that Restalin? It’s GROUND UP, sterilized…. DEAD PEOPLE. Soylent green, but only the plumping, fatty bits.

That’s what happens to you when you will your body to “science.” They sell you off to plump lips and smooth wrinkles, and put the dough into research.

Big money in Dead People For Cosmetic Purposes.

Hey Poolosi, you we have been less than gracious, I have news for you Bambi’s supporters have done criminal things!

Comment by ritamary | 2008-08-14 15:14:09

I guess Nancy Pelosi believes being gracious is one of the important virtues. She is very good at smiling graciously while rattling off the most outrageous nonsense as she did in the interview with Greta.

Question…

So now that Hillary’s name will be in nomination, does that mean PUMA can pack up and start supporting Democrats again?

Comment by jh4hill | 2008-08-14 11:57:05

Not if it’s only a symbolic ‘gesture’ — which is what it sounds like it is. We shall see if it an authentic vote. We do support a Democrat. We support Hillary.

Obama like Reaganomics too much and praised it on the campaign trail constantly. Only one of his many problems.

Comment by Leisa | 2008-08-14 14:21:57

Obama is a Democrat? Show me the Democrat…

He has replaced many delegates already… he has secured his votes, that is why Hillary will be put in nomination.

No worries here about the outcome.

As opposed to FISA-supporting, Constitution-shredding, FAKE Democrats who hate gays and play both sides of the choice card? And who fund wars they say they oppose? Those kinds of Democrats?

Gee, Cynthia McKinney’s the only one with those credentials left to choose from….

Dowd is one of the reasons the NYT has lost believability and readership. She is boringly predictable and is regularly the object of disgust in Somerby’s The Daily Howler.

After 31 yrs. as a NYTimes subscriber, I cancelled my subscription. Gave the poor guy in circulation my two cents…The Times is going downhill fast. They’ve dug their own grave just as the Dems have. They are:

Blind, Deaf and Dumb.

The Times said they didn’t expect to remain competitive - and make money - past next five years. They are seeing to it that their own prediction comes true…only far sooner than they predicted.

The Times is in Murdoch’s sights. They’re probably just earning their stripes in Clinton Derangement Syndrome to please their suitor.

Thank you for writing this.

My thoughts exactly.

I’ve never read her book, but I know her type, and I’m not surprised she writes how to’s about demeaning yourself to get a man.

Comment by 935 Lies | 2008-08-14 16:30:44

I have had the privilege of being married to three different bright, assertive women. One was quite successful at what she did, and was a joy to be around. The second, not so hot as an Earner and not at all career driven, but a good example for our daughter and an excellent mother.

The third one has the most extensive (before I married her) formal education and came from the most fortunate financial and family circumstances of the group.

As a human being, she wasn’t worth the powder required to send her to hell. Think of ANY nasty descriptive term for a female, and, next to that word in BRITANNICA is her likeness.

And she is the ONLY one who wasn’t a Feminist.

She was committed, “ME-ist,” though.
