Some Reporters Are Keeping Their Hands Clean While Other “Journalists” Fill Their Sites with Poor Writing and Manure

Via Mark Halperin’s blog, The Page:

WSJ reports the Land of Lincolner’s “voice is a bit raspy, his eyes are a bit red, and he walks with a hankie or tissue on hand, quickly burying it in a pocket before shaking hands.”

Adds a Washington Times reporter said she felt compelled to use Purell after shaking his hand Tuesday. [Ewwwww.]

mccain-solzhenitsyn-ec.jpgAlso filthy and disgusting is the swift-boating of John McCain by the likes of Andrew Sullivan (”Swift-boat? Moi?“) — tracked by the essential site, Memeorandum.com — and now Talking Points Memo (and this is deeply disappointing to me as a former faithful reader). Here is the large headline at the top of TPM:

Solzhenitsyn Scholar: Cross-In-Dirt Gulag Story Never Happened

They are trying to prove that John McCain’s deeply moving story about the guard drawing a cross in the sand is stolen from a book.

What is despicable about Sullivan and TPM’s underhanded efforts is that the ENTIRE reason is that they know — in their guts — that Barack Obama was an abysmmal failure at Saddleback on Saturday night. They concocted this story to divert attention from Obama’s weak, tepid answers and from McCain’s overwhelming command of the evening. (Now that the “he cheated” diversion has fallen apart, they’ve moved on to another concocted scheme. What will they think of next?)

Thankfully, John McCain’s blogger Michael Goldfarb has talked to a fellow inmate at the hellish prison camp in North Vietnam, and Col. Bud Day — whose ordeal was so “gory” that Mr. Goldfarb is unwilling to describe it in full — confirmed the veracity of Sen. McCain’s account:

Another POW, Same Story

After a brief conversation with Col. Bud Day, I can confirm that Col. Day is most likely the toughest man alive in addition to being the most decorated Air Force veteran in history. Some of the details Day shared with the McCain Report are too gory to reproduce here, but he did confirm that “not long after we all got back together [in the camp],” McCain told him the story of the prison guard who drew a cross in the dirt one Christmas.

I don’t know about you, but I’ll take the word of a fellow inmate at the hellish prison camp over the petty theorizing of Sullivan et al.

Goldfarb links to the Wikipedia entry on Col. Bud Day, and to the description of the Medal of Honor that he was awarded. Here is that entry in full:

Rank and organization: Colonel (then Major), U.S. Air Force, Forward Air Controller Pilot of an F-100 aircraft. Place and date: North Vietnam, 26 August 1967. Entered service at: Sioux City, Iowa. Born: 24 February 1925, Sioux City, Iowa. Citation: On 26 August 1967, Colonel Day was forced to eject from his aircraft over North Vietnam when it was hit by ground fire. His right arm was broken in 3 places, and his left knee was badly sprained. He was immediately captured by hostile forces and taken to a prison camp where he was interrogated and severely tortured. After causing the guards to relax their vigilance, Colonel Day escaped into the jungle and began the trek toward South Vietnam. Despite injuries inflicted by fragments of a bomb or rocket, he continued southward surviving only on a few berries and uncooked frogs. He successfully evaded enemy patrols and reached the Ben Hai River, where he encountered U.S. artillery barrages. With the aid of a bamboo log float, Colonel Day swam across the river and entered the demilitarized zone. Due to delirium, he lost his sense of direction and wandered aimlessly for several days. After several unsuccessful attempts to signal U.S. aircraft, he was ambushed and recaptured by the Viet Cong, sustaining gunshot wounds to his left hand and thigh. He was returned to the prison from which he had escaped and later was moved to Hanoi after giving his captors false information to questions put before him. Physically, Colonel Day was totally debilitated and unable to perform even the simplest task for himself. Despite his many injuries, he continued to offer maximum resistance. His personal bravery in the face of deadly enemy pressure was significant in saving the lives of fellow aviators who were still flying against the enemy. Colonel Day’s conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Air Force and reflect great credit upon himself and the U.S. Armed Forces.[2]

Again — for the umpteenth time — this blog does not endorse, and has no plans to endorse, Sen. John McCain. But we abhor the tactics of Sullivan and TPM.

It will come to no surprise to any of you that the origins of this ugly attack came from a Daily Kos diary. Writes TPM:

There’s been a ton of buzz on the web for the last day or so — beginning with this Daily Kos diary — suggesting that John McCain patterned his story about a Vietamese captor drawing a cross in the dirt before him on a similar episode from Russian novelist Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s time in the Soviet gulags.

But it turns out that this episode probably never happened to Solzhenitsyn at all, and according to a Solzhenitsyn biographer it appears nowhere in his published writing. Columbia University professor Michael Scammell, the author of Solzhenitsyn: A Biography, says the episode “never happened,” and didn’t appear in Solzhenitsyn’s book, Gulag Archipelago, either.

This only solves a piece of the mystery, but it’s a key piece. It doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility that McCain or his biographer, Mark Salter, picked up the tale that this happened to Solzhenitsyn elsewhere and embellished it for their own purposes.

May I also add that I am surprised to read a poorly written phrase, “a ton of buzz,” at a blog that I once considered essential daily reading.

Excuse me? A “ton of buzz”? No real journalist would be caught dead writing a phrase like that.

What has become of TPM?

Is Josh Marshall no longer editing his writers’ work? Have his standards fallen that far?

Indeed, had I been Marshall, I would have replaced “a ton of buzz” with “a ton of manure.”

And then I would have killed the story.

Great post, Susan! The Obots efforts to swiftboat McCain will fail. It only reinforces the narrative that Obama is a flimsy creation of Axlerod. They attack McCain because he won the debate and because Obama doesn’t stand for anything besides his own huge ego.

Comment by workingclass artist | 2008-08-19 18:50:46

I agree Great Post Susan. French Indochina had a history of Catholicism throughout the country before the war. This story was totally plausible to me because this could happen as Christians go underground during times of oppression….Indeed it consistent with the very foundation of Christianity.
Code and visual symbols as a way to signal simpatico is as well and these are all over the walls of catacombs throughout Rome. Christians have ways to survive oppression and persecution. Christians in China are doing it now.
Sullivan has once again exposed himself as the petty, histrionic Fool with delusions of relevance. It as a stupid and foolish attack on an Honorable Soldier……SHEEESH!

Yes, the genesis of the fish symbol was the need to conceal one’s faith in Christ.

Comment by workingclass artist | 2008-08-19 19:31:25

As an Art Student studying Art History I bought a book about Christian symbols used as code during the earliest days of formation through the Middle ages. Most Christians were illiterate and during the days of Persecution throughout the Roman Empire symbols were used to identify houses and meeting places for christian worship that eventually developed into the earliest forms of the Mass. Symbols were also used to mark Holy sites for Pilgrims and denote he lives of the earliest saints and apostles so that the christians could commnunicate the gospels. Long before the earliest written gospels were copied for distribution into what we now know as the bible….Christians were speaking to each other in the oldest universal abstract language. The language of pictures and symbols that could transcend the diverse spoken languages of the Empire. The Fish and the Cross as well as the greek Chi-Rho which may even predate either of the better known symbols.

In fact, the origins of the war in Viet Nam reflected the U.S government’s efforts in trying to prop up a Catholic minority government in a Buddhist country. The story makes complete sense in that context.

I do not trust Barack Obama.

Even though several sources say that the cross in the dirt did NOT happen to Solzhenitsyn. The jerks including Jose — disregard facts and keep with the Obama line ….. but but but McCain cheated — he got captured and was in a prison camp — well damned you know, Soetoro was in Indonesia as a kid — that’s sort of close to being in a prison camp. And then his mom sent him to live with his grand parents — rejected Barry. The other story — Barry wanted to get the hell out of dodge and live in comfort and go to the best school where he wouldn’t have to learn to speak another language CORRECTLY.

Barry Soetoro is lazy — always looking for the easy way out. He is a manipulator — a narcissistic, passive aggressive manipulator.

This little bit from the article sticks out — Josh and friends will believe what they believe. Josh is NO journalist — he is a WHORE.

It doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility that McCain or his biographer, Mark Salter, picked up the tale that this happened to Solzhenitsyn elsewhere and embellished it for their own purposes.

Comment by Northwest rain | 2008-08-19 18:19:36

Personal observation about prison camps — or even Simulated Prison camps.

My dad was Navy air and he spent a large chunk of his career flying over “enemy territory” — Cold War — but HOT flying for the crews who flew over Russia, China and North Korea. One in another squadron went down and all the crews had to take prison camp training.

My guess is that the prison camp training was brutal and realistic — it took a long time for my father and the other men to over come the trauma of their training — sort of like psychology injury by friently fire.

I’m an eye witness to the effects of prison camp TRAINING — not even the real thing. However — what McCain had to endure for 5 years — he should be recognized for his courage and patriotism, love of country — and then move on.

Also another thing these damn jerks who are degrading and disrespecting McCain’s service to his county. He was just a pilot — whatever. The stupid jerks making these remarks — Those ass holes should be required to live on an air craft carrier and WORK on the FLIGHT DECK. That is a damned dangerous place — working up there is no picnic. My dad is Navy air and he also spent a tour on an air craft carrier.

Honorable Service to the military should be respected, noted and then move on.

Obama does NOT have any military service and he hasn’t bothered to learn about the military. His surrogates bleating like a bunch of stupid sheep is really getting to be disgusting.

Damned it is really bad when I feel the need to defend the military. I’m not the greatest fan of the military — because I also know the faults and weaknesses of military life and some of the rare jerks drawn to military service. For many the military is a job — and one that they take pride in doing.

Comment by Katmoon | 2008-08-19 18:30:53

Also think how this translates to military families; if you make slight of a POW’s reputation, what is to prevent them from saying the same thing about our soldiers now, should they ever consider political office? It doesn’t sit well at all.

Comment by Northwest rain | 2008-08-19 19:13:48

Exactly — I’m just one person — reacting to the Obamabot stupidity. And I’m NOT pro-military — it is not an easy life for military kids. Connections to the military run deep in this country — many kids out of high school are joining the military — that’s the only post high school training they can afford.

These kids have family, relatives and friends — these are the votes that dumbo Barry Soetore/Obama are losing. Another generation of military who will be solid GOP — thanks Soetoro.

Soetoro/Obama will lose in huge landslide — biggest ever in November — HE will be on the record books.

Hey dumb ass Soetoro — any more groups you have left to piss off?

In this year’s campaigning, Obama has been allowed to claim “black” as his identity, and no one else is allowed to speak of black issues with any authority, because it is his issue, He has used his bi-racial identity to his advantage, and beaten any opponents over the head with it every chance he gets. It is part of his identity, to be sure and he is allowed to constantly talk about how he suffered growing up black and neglected.

John McCain spent a lot of his life in the military. He was a prisoner of war for years. Those years and those experiences shaped who he is now and are as much a part of his identity as Obama’s blackness. The ordeals he suffered make the worst of what most of us have endured seem trivial.

But, John McCain is never supposed to talk about his life experiences because it is seen as not fair to Barry, who has never been subjected to any true hardship in his life. John McCain is as entitled to talk about his life and how his experiences shaped his identity as Barack or any one else is. He should not be told to shut up about it. We need to know how it affected him if he wants to be President. He seems to have come through this horrible ordeal a strong and honorable man.

It would be nice to know a lot more about Barack Obama’s life and how his experiences shaped his identity, other than being bi-racial. We don’t know anything abut him. He never says a damned thing about his past. Obama is spending most of his time hiding who he is. McCain is putting it all out there for everyone to see.

I went to POW training and it was difficult, dangerous, dirty, and degrading. We were stripped naked with minutes of capture, formed into a circle, then forced stick our noses up the ass in front of us. (Oh, yes, try 30 hours of sleep deprivation, cattle prods and people speaking in foreign languages and all starts becoming quite real so don’t tell me you too tuff to do it) Our training session was so notorious that one of the pictures taken by an instructor ended up on the front page of Pravda under the headline “Army Officers Brutalized” or something like that. (We were not Army; we were Air Force enlisted). Anyway, I agree a thousand percent. People who dishonor the Hell that was Vietnam simply don’t deserve to breath the same air as the rest of us.

P.S. Susan, I thought buzz came in pints? Or was it pecks?

Comment by no vote for Oblabla | 2008-08-19 20:31:50

That’s the problem though Buzz Latte. Look how many of our own socialists/communists have visited Cuba and Venezuela and come back even more ‘in love’ with those oppressive and murderous regimes. Ed Asner, Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Jane Fonda, Kris Kristofferson, Sean Penn…I can go on and on naming off these morons.

What these blowhards don’t realize is that when they visit a communist country they are treated like royalty. They seem to eat up all the propaganda that they’re fed. They are not really allowed to mingle with the masses that are the ones that are hurting. The people in these countries are not allowed to talk against the regime to anyone, they live in constant fear for their and their families lives on a daily basis if they do so, so they wouldn’t speak out. Unless you were/are born there there’s no way you’d ever understand what it’s like living under that type of constant oppression.

Obama sought the evangelical vote, but then the NUTJOB Obama supporters called Rick Warren a liar and cheat and OFFENDED everyone.

NOW they want to say that McCain’s war stories are untrue. Are they so stupid that they do not see that they are now losing Obama the MILITARY VOTE? Are they so DUMB that they do not realize that Obama skipping his visit with wounded American soldiers in Germany offended some in the military?

Are they ALL stupid, or what?

Their tactics lost so many Hillary democrats who might have switched to Obama, and now they are trying to alienate those republicans and certain independents who might have switched to Obama.

WAY TO GO DUMB SHITS!

Comment by Senator O'Donut Hole | 2008-08-19 18:19:36

They didn’t learn from Wesley Clark’s comment that five years in a POW camp doesn’t qualify McCain for the presidency. That one remark on Bob Shieffer’s show energized the Repub base for the first time. Donations to McCain increased significantly that very week.

It’s difficult to impugn any candidate’s military record, but to attack the recollection of a POW…that’s really going a bridge too far. This is the type of politicking that’s to be expected from a crowd that has no respect for the military.

It’s also a form of projection - accusing McCain of making up stories. Obama’s entire presentation has been one big, well - fairy tale!

Comment by Clinton Fan | 2008-08-19 20:12:19

I have a theory about that Wes Clark comment!

I think Wes knew EXACTLY what he was doing when he made that “intemperate” remark. I think he thought about it, guaged the effect, the fallout, and the timing for a statement of regret, and went ahead with it, for purely TACTICAL reasons.

He presented an appearance of being a “good soldier” and made appearances supporting that Chicago turd, but I believe he “deliberately misspoke” in order to TAKE HIMSELF OUT OF THE RUNNING FOR VP.

I mean, really, who in their right mind would want to be playing second banana on the biggest clunker of a ticket since Dukakis-Bentsen?

And Wes Clark isn’t some 0-5 at his first command–he’s a four star general, who held one of the senior joint/International slots in the entire Armed Forces. Had he not screwed up and gotten pissed at those Russkies, he could have ended up on the JCS.

He KNOWS about “misspeaking.” He also knows about “deliberate misspeaking” followed by “insincere apologies.”

I really do think he was inoculating himself against being asked to join that losing ticket! Not that it was likely…but hey…INSURANCE!

Everyone has an opinion on VP picks. Here is Mr. Nader:

Count Ralph Nader as unimpressed by the crop of supposed finalists to be Barack Obama’s running mate.

“I don’t think he’s that dumb,” said Nader, commenting on widespread speculation that Obama’s choices are down to Sens. Joe Biden, Evan Bayh, or Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine.

The smart pick, according to Nader, is Hillary Rodham Clinton. Nader phoned into Politico Tuesday afternoon to offer his prediction that a surprise nod to Clinton is actually what Obama has in mind—never mind the talk of mistrust between the Clintons and Obama.

“He just has to swallow hard and do what JFK did” in picking rival Lyndon Johnson in 1960, said the liberal activist and maverick presidential candidate.

According to Nader’s logic, Obama may dislike Hillary, but will conclude he has no choice but to get over it if he hopes to leave next week’s convention in Denver with a unified party and a decent shot against John McCain in the fall: “The polls show 25 percent of her supporters have not gotten on board.”

“He’s got to be very concerned by the [neck-in-neck] polls and by what happened at Saddleback,” added Nader, referring to the recent candidates forum hosted by evangelist Rick Warren. “He got beat in Saddleback—big time.”

I don’t need Ralph, ‘he who gave us Bush in 2000′, Nader to point out the obvious.

I’m sure it eating 0bama’s guts out right now that he is pretty much backed into a corner and has to deign to consider offering Hillary the Veep position. I’m sure the people in his camp, not to mention Michelle feel similarly.

But what this says to me, is that the SDs need to go on and do the right thing and tell 0bama to piss off. He just ain’t got it. Nominate Hillary and let her choose her own running mate. And let’s beat the pants off McCain in Nov.

But no, that would a smart move and we all know now that the Dems don’t have a brain cell in the entire leadership. We sure as hell know that people like Dean, Pelosi, Kerry don’t have it in them to admit that they were wrong.

So Hillary, if you get the call to be Veep, please say ‘no.’

I voted for you in the Primary but if you get on the ticket with 0bama, you’ll have to:

WIN WITHOUT ME!

I loathe 0bama. And I will not vote to have 4 more years of a president that I despise. Eight years have been quite enough thank you.

i think hillary said no sometime ago. so who? bayh, kaine, or biden. i am betting on kaine.

Comment by apishapa | 2008-08-19 21:05:45

I’d say biden because he is really smart and he knows fireign affairs backwards and forwards. But he does run off at the mouth. Bayh will put eveyone to sleep. Kaine’s response to the SOTU was an embarassment.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-08-19 23:20:53

Kaine would be monumentally stupid, since he’s pro life. Maybe the Dems think they can still win over evangelicals and flip Virginia. They seem that dumb.

Does anyone think that if Obama DOES choose Hillary for VP that HIS base of moonbats will be so angry that they don’t vote for him?

Comment by Newly Independent | 2008-08-19 21:53:35

Good - which guarantees that Obama will lose.

Either way, Obama will be OUT of the picture in November!

Comment by DAB | 2008-08-20 06:16:02

I heard that the Obamites never looked into Hillary’s background and that Michelle was very influential in deciding who gets the VP nod. These point to a “no go” for Hillary and I hope that is true!

Comment by morganjane | 2008-08-20 08:13:53

Bill Mahr said so last night too on Larry King Live. He said ‘we need Hillary’ or something like that. Then said Obama is “republican light”, and dissed McCain but admited he supported McCain in 2000. He is one of the reasons Hillary didn’t make it, he was part of the sexist machine that worshipped the idea of having a black canidate. Bill M. always says Dems are pussies and then said Hillary was too harsh… ?
NOW Bill Mahr is saying “where is my hero”… Hillary was our HERO!

Comment by workingclass artist | 2008-08-20 08:26:18

Bill Mahr is sooooo full o’ shit….( sigh )
He has become another embarrassment…..Hmmmm…..
DO I HEAR THE SQUEEKY SOUND OF COLLECTIVE BACK PEDALLING…..SHEESH!

BTW, all of Obama’s relatives except his grandma are foreign Muslims. can anyone say NATIONAL SECURITY ??

Comment by IndayHill | 2008-08-19 18:47:18

You are definitely correct. Will the Homeland Security give the same rigid screening to the Kenyan radical Muslim relatives of Barrack Hussein Obama, Jr. when they come to attend the coronation at Denver? The maternal grandma is not even given any spot of importance ’cause she is the typical white folk.Of course, when Barry wants to use her for the white votes, then he mentions the grandma.
How phony can he get.

Hillary or McCain ‘08

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-08-19 23:21:47

You’re not allowed to say that.

The swiftboating of McCain won’t work because he’s not going away to wind surf; he’ll have the testesterone to stand up to it.

While Republicans have their own problems this year, they might just defeat a certain competing party that has nothing to offer but the race card, the smear and the Big Lie.

Comment by democracyfirst | 2008-08-19 18:19:05

OT - Andrea Mitchell just said the McCain campaign is asking certain states if he can put a non-republican on the ballot. She surmises it means Lieberman is high on his list.

Oh my goodness! I suggested that since McCain is announcing his VP the day after the ‘obama’ convention, he may be picking Hillary if she isn’t nominated. Now he’s asking if a non-Repub can be on the ballot. I think he and Hillary may have a huge surprise in store for everyone - and I don’t think it is Lieberman.

Comment by fif | 2008-08-19 18:26:11

No way is Hillary jumping to the Republican ticket. She’s a died-in-the-wool Democrat. It would be a great ticket, but I just don’t see her doing that.

Re: the McCain cross. These desperate idiots are shooting themselves in the foot. It will completely backfire. All these ninnies who never served a day in the military are going to pick apart a war hero’s record? It will turn off Americans, big time and rightfully so.

Comment by fif | 2008-08-19 18:27:03

dyed in the wool…

Comment by democracyfirst | 2008-08-19 18:30:43

But she loves this country and the people in it. The one thing that has been bothering me is that Hillary seemed to be putting party before country (but not wholeheartedly). That doesn’t fit into her character. She loves this country.

I agree it is a long shot but anything can happen. If that is the plan, we wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise anyway.

Comment by georgiapeach | 2008-08-19 18:41:22

She wouldn’t have to run on a Republican ticket. She could remain a Democrat and make it a bi-partisan ticket. Or call it a post-partisan ticket if you really want to rub Obama’s face in it.

Comment by democracyfirst | 2008-08-19 18:53:18

Agreed. And remember, Clinton and McCain are good friends and respect each other. Neither of them said much negative about the other in the primary - McCain even defended Hillary once or twice.

It’s a longshot but something big has been in the works and we haven’t figured out exactly what.

Plus I just heard a woman say there are very many pro choice people in the Repub party. I think any conservatives McCain would lose would be more than made up by Hillary supporters and Independents.

Comment by meileen | 2008-08-19 19:36:50

Goddess forgive me, but I actually would prefer her linking herself with McCain rather than Obabi.

Comment by sproutingly | 2008-08-19 21:23:58

It would be very, very smart of McCain to do this. As was pointed out, they are friends, they like each other. I can see it.

Comment by wlm | 2008-08-19 19:36:59

Has certainly crossed my mind. I think it would be great!

I’d love that!!!!!!! from one Georgia’n to another…

Comment by MBC | 2008-08-19 21:21:38

CNN brought it up last night, but I was dozing…we have had a two party ticket before, does anyone know what President?

Comment by sowsear | 2008-08-19 19:37:38

Wasn’t Hillary a Republican before she was a Dem?

Comment by Ferdberfle | 2008-08-19 19:41:22

Yep–worked for Goldwater.

Comment by democracyfirst | 2008-08-19 20:13:19

She switched because she realized her heart was more aligned with the Democratic Party ideology. Now that the Democratic Party’s ideology is corrupt, she may be thinking it is time to switch to something else - maybe working toward the third party we need.

A McCain/Clinton ticket would be a first step.

Comment by Ferdberfle | 2008-08-19 20:19:47

I agree completely, especially the part about the potential for a third party. I was a Democrat for many years but just can’t do it anymore.

Comment by workingclass artist | 2008-08-20 06:54:01

Hmmm….Wasn’t Reagan a democrat before he switched parties ?

Comment by churl | 2008-08-19 19:09:29

That is one of my political fantasies. Talk about getting everyone’s heads spinning in circles– McCain/Clinton –instant winner. And the beginnings of a much needed third, Moderate, party.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-08-19 23:23:32

She’s trying to freak out the GOP base. McCain will pick a conservative with pro life credentials, or he will lose. Andrea Mitchell is attempting a psych out.

Comment by The Real Hope | 2008-08-19 18:21:26

This is election politics. Plain and simple. It is supposed to be nasty and bloody. This way we find out who is the Alpha. McCain can take it so let’s not baby him either. Let them get bloody.

Comment by candymarl | 2008-08-19 18:36:31

So this is not about the good of the country but who the “Alpha male” is? Good grief, let the chest beating begin.

No wonder Hillary was trashed. This is apparently supposed to be a males only club.

Oy.
