It’s Not About Hillary Anymore

Some Hillary supporters are upset that the McCain campaign is using Hillary’s “defeat” to stir the flames of resentment to sway votes toward the GOP. SusanUnPc wrote a very moving piece about this. And then there are the people, women even, who, by using sophistry, disparage Hillary’s supporters, women especially, declaring that by being angry at the way the media and the Obama campaign treats Hillary, we are creating more sexism. Really? What horse pucky is that! Instead, I agree with, Joanne Bamberger who posted this last May on Huffpo:

When someone calls Hillary Clinton a bitch, it’s not just about her. It’s about me and my fellow MOMocrats and my sister. It’s about my mother and my aunts and my daughter. It’s about mothers and friends and women who haven’t even become the next generation of leaders, yet.The most famous and infamous TV pundits aren’t reserving their ‘looks are everything’ moments to talk of Hillary’s cleavage or wrinkles. There are no limits. We are all fair game.

And then there’s Hillary herself, who in all the newspapers and TV blips is calling for her supporters to line up behind the presumptive nominee. HIllary’s most devoted supporters are in a double bind: we do not want to see Hillary blamed if Obama is defeated, and we absolutely want to see Obama go down like the Titanic. Our anger is not about Hillary “losing.” This is about a stolen nomination, about the takeover of the Democratic party by the neo-liberals and the so-called progressives who use sexism, misogyny, and ageism with abandon, who belittle and insult blue collar workers and who use accusations of racism against anyone who points out that Hillary actually won the popular vote. In response to CNN’s Roland Martin, TGW writes:

Why oh why, lectures Roland, can’t Hillary and her supporters put party over “your petty personal issues.” Roland also threw around the word “dumb,” but refused to specify if he was calling Hillary “dumb” or her supporters. And we were just getting used to the term “dead-enders.”But you heard him. Fall in line little wimin! Or in the words of Barack Obama, just ‘get over it.’

If I hadn’t already been a feminist for the past 40 years, this whole primary debacle would be my conversion. Watching how it continues to be open season for shooting down Hillary, many people, not only women but especially women, have moved passed the primary and into a vast and airless realm of unreality. How has my party, the Democratic Party, become so corrupt? They use sexism to demean Hillary and ugly power plays to “defeat” her, as we saw in the RBC decision regarding MI and FL. Some of us are willing to forego our allegiance to the party because IT NO LONGER REPRESENTS US AND OUR VALUES:

Ooops. Somebody isn’t falling in line. In a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll taken after Obama announced his VP pick, 27 percent of Hillary supporters say they’ll vote for McCain, up from 16 percent in late June. “The number of Clinton Democrats who say they would vote for McCain has gone up 11 points since June.”

Using the argument about the Supreme Court judges and Roe v Wade to guilt-trip people into voting for Obama is the height of hypocrisy in a party that has used sexism and misogyny to undermine the very best candidate for women. Do they think women are so issue oriented that we will allow one of our smartest and strongest leaders to be a sacrificial victim on the altar of their agenda and go along with it? For many women, this has gone far beyond Hillary, far beyond the election, far beyond platform politics:

With the brothers Roland Martin and Jack Caffetry lecturing the little wimin about our “petty personal issues,” the numbers of rebellious women can only increase.

For example, read this post by Riverdaughter, which she begins with a quote from Dowd’s Hillary-blaming piece a few weeks back. Dowd wrote, “Hillary Clinton feels no guilt about encouraging her supporters to mess up Barack Obama’s big moment, thus undermining his odds of beating John McCain.” Riverdaughter posts in response to this:

Ladies, putting aside the lie that Hillary is putting us up to this (she has absolutely nothing to do with our movement), is there something familiar about that sentence? Did it strike a bell deep in the corner of your mind where you have stored an unpleasantry? From personal experience, I can say that without exception, I have never met a man who did not behave as if his reason for being was more important than mine. No matter how supportive they were, when push came to shove, it was always my life that more easily sacrificed and compromised. My wishes and aspirations were a little less lofty. My gifts and talents a little less meaningful and worthy of praise. Nothing short of my winning a Nobel Prize, a Pulitzer and a humanitarian award would be acknowledged as sufficient for a life changing decision to go in my favor. Maybe even that wouldn’t be enough. When push comes to shove, where a man lives, what he does with his time, what career he pursues and what dreams he has will always come first. The only power women have in most relationships, ultimately, is the power to walk away from them. That is, if she wants to be judged a person in her own right.

This is strong language, reminiscent of the early days of the women’s movement. But this is how many of us feel. This is no longer about Hillary Clinton for President, although we wish she was our candidate. This is about the Democratic Party’s willingness to abuse an exceptional woman in order to promote a mediocre man.

Oh I love McCains new ads.

I am a feminist, a Clinton donor, a Clinton door knocker and leafletter. I am American first and America is best served by having a Democratic President elected in November.

Four more years of Republican misrule is not even worth thinking about.

Comment by Dr. Kate | 2008-08-26 17:44:00

I’d like a real democrat, not the falsness that is Soetoro.

Just any democrat won’t do for the highest office in the land. shame on the DNC for giving us the least qualified candidate in 40 years.

I am a feminist, a Clinton donor, a tireless Clinton campaign volunteer, a mother of 3, a professor, a wife, and a woman of color. I was and remain inspired by Senator Clinton. But what I am no longer is a member of the undemocratic party. Country before party. I will not line up and support Obama. Nobama, not now, not ever,

Comment by Ex-PUMA | 2008-08-26 18:35:52

I hope you take moral responsability for

*the selection of pro abortion Supreme Court justices
*more dead in Iraq
*the disrepair of our infrastructure which has led to deaths of people on bridges collapsing
*a future katrina
*further worsening of our environment
*more home foreclosures
*more jobs lost

I will be supporting Clinton by working with her to secure Obama in the White House. Not my first choice but now the best choice.

Comment by PITA | 2008-08-26 18:50:32

I am a feminist Democrat, Clinton donor,Democratic supporter for 5 decades, but currently,I am a very disappointed DNC backer.
I cannot accept the fact that the most qualified presidential candidate, Senator Hillary Clinton, was victimized by corrupt DNC party leaders, led by Barack Obama. She & President Bill Clinton are hostages of DNC deceptive leaders. Democrat Party is NOT for the people but it is now all for Barack Obama, who is empty-suited.America is NOT safe under his watch. So, ex-Puma, WAKE-UP !! Do yor civic duty & educate yourself about your idol, Obama.
Do you know, he has not experienced the real job before & during his adult life? Talking of GWB, Obama is WORST than Bush ! Now, he demands Hillary & President Clinton to work harder to unite the Democratic Party? THAT IS HIS JOB !!!
HillMcCain ‘08 !
God Save America !!!

I am a feminist demcrat,Hillary supporter, dono as well, but I will never vote for the second choice nobama, We made our choice and it was Hillary, but the DNC morons decided to slelect the lackie.

I am voting for John McCain all the way to the White House!!!!!!

Fu@& You Nobama and the DNC!!!!!

Comment by Belynda | 2008-08-26 19:42:43

You are so lost, and childish, didn’t get what you wanted, so put another Republican in office out of spite! THAT’S REALLY SMART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Katmoon | 2008-08-26 19:51:07

And.. be realistic when you vote, really read the issues and realize there is only so much money available, and there is only so much time, about 3.5 years, not 4, because of future campaigns, etc. The major issues that may get addressed if we are lucky, are the war, the economy, health care, the educational system, social security and the environment and infrastructure. Whatever issue is the biggest pig gobbling up the money for our country, will get hit the hardest, and it may well be based on that perception, not what is most humane or decent. No funding can be released if there isn’t a way to stop the money from bleeding out. I’m just saying whomever you think can truly give what we need, and who will be willing to work with that person and their administration. Whatever your particular candidate considers the big pig, will produce what becomes priority for issues to be solved. It’s pretty to think so much can be taken care of, but I truly believe you have to staunch the bleeding first; I have my ideas where that is at and who I see will be able to handle it as a president.

Comment by BlueTopaz | 2008-08-26 19:56:47

Or maybe, just maybe, BO is more dangerous than JM? When someone cheats, lies and bullies his way to the presidency, he is up to no good. Just look at W.

You, Faux-PUMA and the rest of the BO clan are responsible for any grief we face in the next 4 years. Own it, bitch!!!

Comment by IndianaDem | 2008-08-27 00:45:27

You don’t think 4 more years of the current republican economic policy would be dangerous? I’m not sure the country could survive it for another 4 years. We’ll be militarily tapped out and financially bankrupt.

The last 7 years have been built on a foundation of republican lies. 4,147 American soldiers are dead because of republican lies. And half of the McCain attack ad content is built on distortions and lies.

What am I supposed to think about all of that?

Please go back to your room, in the basement of your parents house and turn off your computer… grow up, earn a living and then, and only then, come back and we will listen to your screams, and we won’t tell you we told you so…

IndayHill, you said Hillary was victimized by a corrupt DNC led by BO. The DNC was and is corrupt in light of their selection of the nominee, BO, long before the first primary contest and set out to make it happen. Historically, the DNC and party leaders remain neutral until AFTER the nominee was selected by the voters.

However, this effort was not LED by BO!! He has done what the above mentioned told him to do. They “fixed” the primary schedule to favor him, he is using Dean’s 50 State Strategy, Pelosi got the Silicon Valley, CA venture capitalist company to organize his slick hi-tec campaign including the record breaking fundraising, the thousands who came to the events, and organized the fraudulent caucuses - ONLINE - with the DNC blessing. Their strategy was to run up the delegate count by organizing ALL the caucuses, sending MoveOn.Org thugs to take them over and disenfrancize Hillary voters.

THAT is the way this unqualified candidate is where he is. He most assurely was NOT in charge of it, but went along with rigging the primary to defeat the most qualified candidate who won all the big state primaries and happened to be a woman who was set to make history.

BO was brought across the finish line with the fraudulent caucus delegates (207) AND the Super Delegates.

For they don’t change their minds- for the truth of the muddy waters of Obama is too dirty to look through- you must have found a mud collector and found some small entry to the goodness of this man. I happen to like McCain very much, and as a woman who was a fervent Hillary supporter even I know that at times Hillary is and can be a b**ch. John McCain is a straight talker, and saying things that are true even when they might be hurtful is an admirable quality, and necessary in a leader.

John McCain also once called his wife a c**t and a tr****pe; we must ask ourselves - well, given the circumstances (she was criticising his hair, and has a record of drug abuse) wasn’t this true as well?

Give John McCain a break already! He was a POW, as well as a prisoner of war and a war hero. He has the leadship edge!

GO PUMA! GO MCCAIN!

Comment by vinnie | 2008-08-26 15:41:27

you know, I keep on hearing this so-called rant he went off on his wife…who’s the source? let me guess, an anonymous reporter? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not defending McCain, just want to know where this story came from.

Comment by bmc | 2008-08-26 15:54:37

Cliff Schecter, a writer who blogs [or used to blog] at Americablog. Schecter wrote about it in his book swiftboating McCain. The source was two reporters who say they witnessed it. I haven’t read Schecter’s book, and can’t vouch for his “sources,” either.

Comment by AnnieCarmel | 2008-08-26 16:29:33

Was that “witnessed” along with his fathering a black illegitimate child…except that he didn’t? The claim of which hurt his adopted Bangaladeshi daughter and prompted her to ask Cindy McCain “Mommy, why does the President of the United States hate me?”

No, I don’t think McCain will ever be Bush3. And, I can’t imagine anyone saying the c word in front of reporters…so that rings false…even when suffering Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.

Comment by Jane | 2008-08-26 19:54:33

As a lifelong feminist I have to say this anecdote about McCain, and it probably is true, has the importance of a pebble. Who among us has never called our girlfriends, boyfriends, lover, mate, husband or wife a name, in the heat of an argument?
How utterly ridiculous that this story has any merit in being recounted. Im not voting for McCain for Sainthood, Im voting for him as my second choice after Hillary, as someone I believe has integrity, and in spite of having called his wife an unbecoming name, the moral backbone and fiber needed to be a US President.
Obama and his crew routinely say unbecoming things about Hillary, untrue things, and BO has shown a side of himself I can only interpret as being misogynistic.
So this story about once upon a time when John McCain called his wife a name, is pretty lame and its time to move on to the bigger picture.

I don’t know Techdude, I don’t know if he is responsible for this story, I don’t know if McCain ever uttered those words, I don’t know who you are and I don’t care. What I do know is the following: Obama ran the most sexist campaign I have ever seen and has allowed things to be said in his name without ever repudiating the words or the speakers. I also know the DNC is corrupt and has managed to divide the party in a way that has never happened and that’s saying a lot about Pelosi, Dean, Brazil and Reid. I was told, by Donna Brazil to stay home so I am assuming they don’t want my vote. I am also assuming you don’t care enough about your candidate to want him to win badly enough that you are willing to treat anyone who disagrees with disrespect. That not only tells me more than enough about your character, but it also reflects the attitude of your candidate. I could not watch his wife speak last night because I know what she said about supporting Hillary since I heard it from her own mouth. I heard Obama say he didn’t think his supporters would vote for Hillary, but her’s would vote for him. Well, SUPRISE. He was wrong about that just as he was wrong about FISA, Cheney’s energy plan, faith based initiatives. So why don’t you go crawl back under the rock you came out of and stop trying others how to vote? You have no credibility and neither does Obama.

Even is McCain said this, he didn’t flip Hillary off in public while playing music demeaning to all women.

I’m just curious, what exactly has Hillary done or said that makes you think she can be a bitch?

I don’t care what John McCain has done, he had no business calling his own wife or any woman a cunt. That is a disgusting, vulgar word. Obama’s rapper friends call women bitches and ho’s so we know where he stands on this.

Comment by A SLAP IN THE FACE | 2008-08-26 16:03:08

Look I was just making a point OK? Get a grip! People constantly try to say McCain is anti-woman, and they try to make Hillary supporters who support McCain feel guilty about it by citing the Hillary and Cindy comments and by looking at his record. Well they can kiss my a**!

I don’t give a HOOT whether McCain is pro-life or if he opposes fair wage rules for women (paying women the same as men is just affirmative action, we are NOT like blacks, and don’t need it thank you very much).

Even if McCain’s record on women’s rights isn’t the same as a Democrat’s, he has something no other Democrat has - CHARACTER AND LEADERSHIP! Did John McCain get a fair wage when he was a POW? Did John McCain have a “choice” when he was a POW?

As to Hillary NOT being a B**CH, well wait until tonight. It breaks my heart, but I feel like HILLARY is going to be a SLAP IN THE FACE TONIGHT unless she endorses JOHN MCCAIN, POW!

If you want to truly honor the 88th anniversary of a woman’s right to vote, do it my voting for someone who KNOWS FIRSTHAND what it means to not be allowed to vote - while being a POW. Do it by voting for McCain!

GO PUMA, GO MCCAIN!

McCain’s actions as a POW are not relevant if Obama’s actions traveling to nations like Pakistan aren’t relevant. The most obvious and glaring mistake is not holding all three candidates (yes, Senator Clinton is a candidate) to the same standards.

Barack Obama is bi-racial and his black half equals about 10-15% of the population. Even as a male he represents less than half of the total population. Senator Clinton represents more than half of the population but you wouldn’t know it by the way she, and her supporters, are treated. But watch out, you’ve awakened a sleeping pack of PUMAs and if Senator Clinton does decide to use her superpowers….you minority males are going to be in big trouble.

BHO is 50% caucasian and just 8% black, He is mostly Arab on father’s side.
There have been previous mixed race Presidents.
Doris Goodwin, historian, says at least 5 previous Presidents had other race genetics.
BHO is nothing special.
He’s going to lose anyway. After he looses by a huge landslide for McCain, his black supporters are going to abandon the “black man” He’ll be back C-town working the neighborhoods.
Maybe Rezko’s wife can help the Obama’s sell their house when he loses his job as Senator.

Comments such as yours are why. Muslim is not a nationality.

I am a Democrat. Oppose racism and sexism, and I can not stand with a group that espouses racism, that has worked to undermine the candidate I supported and is actively supporting John McCain.

PUMA is a disgrace and I am ashamed I was ever a supporter.

Comment by Diana | 2008-08-26 19:30:39

Just stop it already you proved yesterday with your comments you were never a PUMA. You weren’t even familiar with how this blog is run and how it’s been run since the primaries. Then you acted shocked to find out there are some Republicans that post here. Links to any Republican sites.

Why should we not use those links when they’re using video to back up their claims? When their claims are truthful? So please quit making a fool of yourself and pretending you were ever a PUMA.

I don’t doubt(well yes I do) that maybe you were a Hillary supporter that got some fantasy in your head she was going to be the VP. When she herself told US from DAY ONE she was not even being considered. When she herself told US FROM DAY ONE she was not being vetted. When she herself told US FROM DAY ONE that she would not be his VP.

It is not ours nor Hillary’s responsibility that you got that twisted fantasy in your head. That now she is not his VP you’ve decided you need to take revenge on the PUMA’S.

SO PLEASE! Come back to reality. It’s not all about you, and you would have known she wasn’t going to be his VP if you’d have paid ANY ATTENTION to what she said FROM THE BEGINNING.

Comment by Diana | 2008-08-26 19:37:05

Oh and one more thing just because Hillary was a running candidate does not mean she still doesn’t get vetted. Biden was also in the running and was vetted. When they asked Hillary for her paperwork to be vetted she told them, “Don’t ask for them if she is not seriously being considered.” They never asked her for them again, so she said she knew she was never even up for consideration. That alone should have laid to rest your fantasy. Get a clue.

God you’re a dolt. He certainly didn’t say they were nationalities. This is how you bots work-you deliberately misquote and then bash the person. That, my troll, is a form of lying. Which makes you a liar.

Comment by Jane | 2008-08-26 20:08:14

Ex, you are a pathetic liar, no one is buying your story about being a PUMA or even someone who understands what the Dem Party was about, before it was coopted by trolls, thugs and crooks.
You failed the secret internet handshake test, so give it a rest. No one is going to convert to your brand of fundamentalism

Good, but I still think it’s about Hillary.

If Obama and his people were not such openly arrogant, dismissive jerks overly concerned with creating a monolithic message, they could have finessed this through.

Instead, the fought against a convention vote, a fundamental American principle. Now they want to pre-test the vote in the “hotels” hours before the roll call they agreed to. Why? Some worry Hillary could win, and maybe more probable that Hillary loses by a thinner margin than the Obama people have spun for the media.

They had control of the echo chamber media, but now start to lose it. There are still some dead enders who insist in an elitist tone of voice the PUMAs are small, and only recently concocted, and the biggest lie–they hurt Hillary. They help Hillary, 99% of Americans love a fighter.

Comment by Jack | 2008-08-26 15:51:52

add–and if they know there is trouble in the hotels, they will change the rules at the convention.
