HOW DARE SHE KEEP THAT BABY ALIVE!

Posted by Mary Ellen of The Divine Democrat

Today while reading No Quarter, there was an interesting post entitled, A NEW LOW, regarding an article in Salon written by a doctor.

After reading the post, I followed the link to read his entire story, hoping to see a sign that this doctor is not the quack that he came off looking like. Personally, I keep a keen lookout for these types because Lord knows there are plenty of them out there. After reading his article I came away with the same feeling I had when I read dcmediagirl’s post … the guy is either a quack, or a man who disingenuously used his position as a physician, leaving out key information, in order to make his point. I’m leaning towards the latter.

In the article, he ponders this…

We could ask, given that Palin had no doubts about seeing her pregnancy through, why she bothered to take a genetic test. Why not, as you might expect a woman in her position and with her outspoken beliefs to do, decline any testing or counseling? Of course, it seems very reasonable to want to know about the health of your baby and to have time to prepare (emotionally and otherwise) for a baby that may have a genetic disorder. But that doesn’t negate the fact that by having a blood test, Palin was given a choice about what to do.

Now, I’m not sure what specialty Doctor Rahul K. Parikh practices, but any doctor who has gone through medical school should know the answer as to why she took this test. He did mention that this would give a woman the opportunity to prepare emotionally…and then added “and otherwise”, but left it at that. How convenient for him that he left out what that “otherwise” was.

That “otherwise” he left out would be that between 40% to 50% of Down Syndrome babies are prone to Atrial Septal Defect, which is an abnormal connection between two atria in the upper chambers of the heart. Now, why would a mother, or the obstetrician of the mother want to know this ahead of time? Because a mother who does want to have her child regardless of the fact he has Downs Syndrome would want to make contact with a Pediatric Cardiac Physician to prepare for the likelihood that the child may need surgery immediately after birth or later if necessary. The Obstetrician would like to know if he will be delivering a Downs Syndrome Child because that way he can be prepared for any complications that may arise during the birth of the child. He may decide to deliver the baby by C-section instead of natural birth so as to make it easier for a baby who may be born with problems with his lungs or heart.

The fact is, Sarah Palin did what ANY mother carrying a baby with Down Syndrome would do, she was assuring that her baby would be born in an environment that would allow the doctor to handle any medical emergencies IN ORDER TO SAVE THE BABY! Now, isn’t that consistent with her pro-life stance?

Oh, and this gets better. The so-called expert in the medical field ended his story with this…

So while I respect Palin’s decision to raise Trig, that’s all the respect she will get from me. I don’t see eye-to-eye with her on anything else: energy, guns, sex education and of course a woman’s right to choose. Her supporters say that Trig signals that she practices what she preaches. But her to decision to have him is also a sign of her hypocrisy. [emphasis mine]

So, here we have a mother who is anti-abortion. And that mother decides to take the test recommended by her Obstetrician to look for possible abnormalities because she is at the age where her child may have Downs Syndrome. She does this because, as I’m sure the doctor explained that the child may have a heart defect and they must be ready for this. I will tell you that is exactly what the doctor said because when I had my fourth child I was 35 years old and even back then this advise was given, and that was quite awhile ago. And this makes her a hypocrite? Well, how dare she want what was best for her child? How dare she do everything she could to be sure that this child would be born into a safe environment!

Those who say that Sarah Palin is on the wrong side of the issue regarding abortion, that’s fine. She is anti-abortion unless the life of the mother is in danger. She is pro contraception because she believes every woman has the right to do all she can not to become pregnant.

So how does going through testing for the child’s best interest and choosing to have the child with Downs Syndrome make her a hypocrite when she’s made it very clear that she is anti-abortion? I say it doesn’t…what do you say?

powerful story — this needs to go somewhere

Comment by Paul F. Villarreal | 2008-09-06 12:14:29

Very powerful. Thanks for writing about this, DD.

I thought I heard on the radio yesterday someone saying that if you are over 35 you are required to have this procedure done. Not sure if this is true or not.

That doctor is a joke, and should be seriously reprimanded for what he wrote. How many more comments on mothering will we be hearing from men, exactly? Sexism much?

These punks and jerks are tying to prevent Palin from becoming the first female VP in our nation’s annals. They want to stop history from being made.

No way. We have to stare them down and push back.

Women have waited too long for this chance, and they should not have to wait a moment longer. African-American men had the right to vote decades before women did in America, now it’s time to return the favor and help the ladies up the ladder. Justice demands it.

Comment by Felizarte | 2008-09-06 12:50:05

I am bothered by people who say they are pro-choice, then show disrespect for a woman who chooses how to proceed with her pregnancy. It seems their idea of pro-choice is simply to have an abortion. Women do have choices: to be or not to be pregnant.

I am aghast at all the tabloids this week that have gone on a rampage against Sarah Palin. I pray there are enough decent voters who will express their outrage on Nov. 4 and show support for women, and a capable woman candidate. This has to stop.

Comment by Paul F. Villarreal | 2008-09-06 13:13:20

Write, call, boycott, etc.

They want to shove Obama down our throats. The only way we win is if we hit back hard, and hit them where it hurts — in the wallet.

I just shot off a couple of emails to Bill Maher and Conan O’Brien about their tasteless jokes about the Palin family.

If we let these people get away with this, then we will have 4 years of Moron in The White House.

No way.

good! bill maher made me sick last night. he was saying something that he believed Bristol really gave birth to Trig. then he commented on sarah, saying ‘look who we’re talking about’. you’re not talking about sarah, you’re talking about a 17 year old.

he kept making fun of a 17 year old getting pregnant out of wedlock. does he not know that’s how his messiah was born?

Comment by Ferd McBerfle | 2008-09-06 13:40:56

I used to like Bill Maher. He was politically incorrect, understanding that there was no way one could pick up a turd by its clean end. He changed about 9 months ago, becoming in-your-face misogynist. The pot he’s smoking must be laced with belladonna or maybe dumbcane. I refuse to watch him any longer.

Comment by Hillary or Bust | 2008-09-06 13:45:24

Bill Maher has always been a misogynist. I saw him a long time ago at the Playboy website launch party (don’t ask me why I was there, since I hate that sort of thing). He’s always made comments about sex and women. He hasn’t changed on this one whit.

Comment by Ferd McBerfle | 2008-09-06 18:09:53

I’m sorry but, at least initially, I didn’t see it that way. I did not mean to offend you.

Comment by Justmy02 | 2008-09-06 14:13:36

I guess Maher forgot Obama’s mama was not married when he was conceived, and then she proceeded to marry a bigamist…

I agree that Pro-Choice people have absolutely no business saying anything to Sarah Palin about her decisions to keep Trig. After all, it was her CHOICE, now wasn’t it!

Comment by AnnieCarmel | 2008-09-06 18:06:21

Bill Maher had something to say to me when he bashed Bush. However, I canceled HBO because of his disgusting marginalization of women. He’s just silly now. Saw a couple of minutes of his interview on Larry King…seems in spite of all his criticism of Mr. Floppy, he’ll still get Bill’s vote. Just too much in common on the woman hating front, I guess. Aside from MoDo and Huff & Puff, I wonder how women rationalize going on his show. Of course, the two lefty women above are equal opportunity haters so he can always get something from them to prop up his POV.

Katmandu,
you are correct
Maty Ellen’s article needs to get out.

The doctor’s comments were pure propaganda.
Will the average voter be intellectually sophisticated enough to catch this error in the doctor’s logic and see this article for what it really is- PROPOGANDA.

Doctor intentionally misled the readers of his comments by presenting an invalid argument.

“We could ask, given that Palin had no doubts about seeing her pregnancy through, why she bothered to take a genetic test. Why not, as you might expect a woman in her position and with her outspoken beliefs to do, decline any testing or counseling? Of course, it seems very reasonable to want to know about the health of your baby and to have time to prepare (emotionally and otherwise) for a baby that may have a genetic disorder. But that doesn’t negate the fact that by having a blood test, Palin was given a choice about what to do.”

The doctor left out evidence that would definetely have changed the outcome or conclusion of any reader reading his statement.

There are MANY MANY reasons why a woman would want the genetic testing-as the good doctor admits HOWEVER he presents the readers with a FALSE DILEMMA.

Palin never considered abortion as an option. Why is the doctor inferring by his comment below that she did? “WHAT TO DO does not include abortion…

“But that doesn’t negate the fact that by having a blood test, Palin was given a choice about what to do”

Comment by Idiocracy08 | 2008-09-06 12:50:17

let’s say she is pro-choice and needed help with her decision on whether to keep or abort the baby. under an Obama presidency, she’d probably only have the help of his proposed plan of more faith based organizations, who would in turn advise her to keep the baby.

Wish this had its own thread. From the Denver Post:
http://blogs.denverpost.com/opinion/2008/09/06/republican-recycling/

This morning, Republicans tell me that a worker at Invesco Field in Denver saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. Guerrilla campaigning. They will use these flags at their own event today in Colorado Springs with John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Before McCain speaks today, veterans will haul these garbage bags filled with flags out onto the stage — with dramatic effect, no doubt — and tell the story.

“What you see in the picture I sent you is less than half of total flags,” a Republican official emailed. “We estimate the total number to be around 12,000 small flags and one full size 3×5 flag.”

I’m not sure what the DNC was supposed to do with unused hand-flags, frankly. But the Republicans are obviously questioning someone’s patriotism here.

Comment by Lurker | 2008-09-06 11:31:22

The VFW would have gladly taken those unwanted flags. It doesn’t matter what the size or condition; old glory “does not” belong in the TRASH.

That so-called doctor should visit an intensive care unit in a neo-natal ward.
There are numerous infants who require immediate life-saving measures at birth.

How is this different from when Bill Frist did his video exam of Terri Schrivo? Or when doctors refuse to prescribe the morning after pill to women on religious grounds. This guy needs his license yanked.

Comment by Pink Panther | 2008-09-06 11:39:21

Obama’s Vote on Terri Schiavo

In March 2005, just weeks before Terri Schiavo died from a painful 14-day starvation and dehydration death, the Republican Congress approved legislation transferring the case from state courts to federal courts, delaying her death. When her brain was later autopsied, there was almost NO brain tissue left.

“An exhaustive autopsy found that Terri Schiavo’s brain had withered to half the normal size since her collapse in 1990 and that no treatment could have remotely improved her condition” (Reference: nytimes. )

But Obama voted along with the Republican Congress and pro-life Democrats, to have a court intervene rather than have her husband make a decision regarding her life.

During an April 2007 debate Obama said: “I think professionally the biggest mistake that I made was when I first arrived in the Senate. There was a debate about Terri Schiavo, and a lot of us, including me, left the Senate with a bill that allowed Congress to intrude where it shouldn’t have.”

During a February 2008 debate Obama was asked name a regret and he said he would like to take back his vote authorizing Congress to intervene to save the life of the brain-injured Florida woman Terri Schiavo.

Comment by StrawberrybitesBarky | 2008-09-06 11:49:48

Thank you Pink. I did not know that. Obama is not a democrat.

Comment by Pink Panther | 2008-09-06 13:36:36

Strawberry,
I hope you are blogging on other sites. You are terrific.

I’ve been a Democrat my entire adult life and Obama’s Democratic Party is NOT the Democratic Party I supported in the beginning.

The MSM is not getting out the true picture of Obama. He is scary as hell.

It will only be through the bloggers that the truth comes out about Obama. However, keeping the information on this site is not good enough. We need to spread the truth about Obama.

“We didn`t leave the Democratic Party; the Democratic Party left us.”

Comment by PitBull | 2008-09-06 13:36:44

Obama is neither DeomcRat nor Republican nor Independent. Truly and honestly his soul is that of Marxist as his mother and grandmother brought him up to be.If I change my party to Republican because of what I have witnessed with the Dem corruption, I’ll always be a Dem. Doesn’t matter what I call myself. It’s about the soul of a party. Too bad most of the Dems in congress have lost their souls if they even had one to begin with.

Comment by Pink Panther | 2008-09-06 13:42:41

We need a new viable party.

Comment by VinceP1974 | 2008-09-06 13:45:43

The Republican Party isn’t much better.. it’s the stupid party.

Us (ex)Republicans view our own party as stupid, shortsighted, non-assertitive, and unable to communicate

We view the Democrats as fractured into camps yet still have a basic framework of unity.. we also think they could be ruthless , and sometimes shameless.

I’m talkig about how we view the politicans of the two sides.. not the regular people.

Do Democrats think the same way in reverse? (Dems are stupid , shortsighted… and Reps are ruthless etc.)

Comment by Ferd McBerfle | 2008-09-06 13:49:36

As an ex-Democrat, I do think the party was stupid and short-sighted. However, I never thought Republicans were ruthless, just some of their more dogmatic operatives, e.g., Rove.

Comment by MessyMarcy | 2008-09-06 17:26:40

I confess, I did. I used to say that I just could not understand how any woman could be a Republican. I believed Democrats to be generally decent, well-meaning people, although sometimes spineless and inept. I thought Republicans were mostly mean, sexist, greedy people who only cared for themselves. I’m not going to be joining the Republican Party any time soon, but it’ll be a cold day in hell before I support or even vote for any Democrat who had a hand in the nomination-stealing, woman-bashing, race-baiting shenanigans coming from the party these days. I’m voting McCain/Palin, and I am absolutely in awe of all the good works with no publicity that Cindy McCain has done. Now I going to try to be through with stereotyping people.

Comment by MessyMarcy | 2008-09-06 17:29:11

Also, look at how the whole Terry SChiavo vote was taken-

This decision was reached by ‘VOICE VOTE’ AND

NO OFFICIAL TALLY OF THOSE VOTING FOR IT OR AGAINST IT…

Also- I DO NOT KNOW HOW MANY CONGRESS MEMBERS ACTUALLY VOTED FOR IT.

WHAT IS MEANT BY UNANIMOUS???Sen Obama is hiding under that term “Unanimous decision”

WHAT WAS THE COUNT?

WHO REFUSED TO VOTE FOR IT?

Talk about Govt transparency…

Sen Obama is okay about this voting process?

The decision was controversial and so was the method used to reach it…

From Wikipedia.org.
Terry SChiavo-

Palm Sunday Compromise
Main article: Palm Sunday Compromise
Governor Bush and Congressional Republicans anticipated Greer’s adverse ruling well before it was delivered and worked on a daily basis to find an alternative means of overturning the legal process by utilizing the authority of the United States Congress. On March 20, 2005, the Senate, by unanimous consent, passed their version of a relief bill; since the vote was taken by voice vote, there was no official tally of those voting in favor and those opposed. Soon after Senate approval, the House of Representatives passed an identical version of the bill S.686, which came to be called the “Palm Sunday Compromise” and transferred jurisdiction of the Schiavo case to the federal courts. The bill passed the House on March 21 at 12:41 a.m. EST.

President Bush flew to Washington D.C. from his vacation in Texas in order to sign the bill into law at 1:11 a.m. EST.

As in the state courts, all of the Schindlers’ federal petitions and appeals were denied, and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to grant certiorari, effectively ending the Schindlers’ legal options.

Comment by Badger | 2008-09-06 18:07:53

Actually, that’s not quite true. One Democratic Senator voted and he voted with the Republicans. It was Tom Harkin who is a pro-choice liberal from Iowa and a former presidential candidate himself. Senator Harkin is very involved with disability rights and many in that community have serious issues with the “right to die” movement.

When those Bots were busy smearing Sarah Palin with the lie that the baby wasn’t her own (which was bad enough), I saw this comment on another blog.

Down Syndrome, my ass.
I prefer the more accurate term, “drunken teenage mother fetal alcohol syndrome.”

Yeah, I said it.

Could you believe that? When I went to this girl’s profile, she claimed she was a journalist and worked in Public Relations. Honestly…not only are they monsters, but they lie through their teeth to build themselves up. This was minor compared to some of the stuff I’ve seen this dipwad write on her own blog and others. No journalist would write this stuff…hell, no human being worth their salt would write that about a baby or a teen ager. But they think the kids are fair game…even the infant.

I agree with you. Palin’s personal beliefs do not allow for abortion. So if she’d had one that would make her a hypocrite and I’d agree.

People who want Roe v Wade overturned also don’t believe in contraception. Palin does.

Unless this person was her physician he has no idea what he’s talking about. Every pregnancy is different.
Looks like we’ve got the “liberal” version of Frist. You know, the kind of doctor that is not personally involved in case, but can diagnose from afar.

Implying that any infant with possible genetic birth defects should be aborted smacks of Eugenics. That’s a dangerous place to go.

Our second son was born when we were both in our middle thirties. We had concerns about birth defects and if a test had been available, we would have done it. If our son would have tested in vitro for Downs Syndrome owe would have not aborted him. Turns out he did have a cleft lip and had 7 surgeries before he was 9 years old. The first when he was a few days old. He endured a fair amount a ridicule when in a public day care/school. After moving to a Christian day care/school, no one ever teased him or harassed him. He’s now a Lutheran minister. I think the Dr. is way off and shows a callous disregard for the agony parents of kids w/ “differences” sometimes suffer.

I say if any woman wants to know all they can about their unborn baby that is their business and their business only. Don’t doctors even operate on unborn babies today when there is something wrong that can be corrected? I don’t know much about that, I am an older man. But seems I read about doctors operating on unborn babies to correct some things before they can become worse. Is that not a good reason to have those tests done?

Comment by gerard "Barracuda" Nedich | 2008-09-06 11:57:29

yes, in fact i saw a bbc documentary the other day where a doctor used a robot to do this…

also, as someone who has gone through the experience of a miscarriage i can tell you that the doctors wanted to run all sorts of test very early on on my partner when we got pregnant again…

only Palin’s doctor can make any sort of comment (not that he/she would anyway) but this doctor needs to shut the fuck up…

what an ass…

Seems the program I seen was also about robotic operations on unborn babies.

That reminds me of Dr. Quack Frist making pronouncements in the Terri Schiavo case. He was proven entirely wrong after the autopsy but never did make any amends, e.g., an apology to the husband.

If a doctor isn’t directly involved in a case, his/her opinion is not of much use.

Yes, sometimes certain defects in the heart or digestive system can be operated on in utero. That’s why these tests are so important. What the doctor did in that story in Salon was to leave out pertinent information in order to make a political point, which IMO, is morally reprehensible and a clue as to the lack of character he has. And that’s putting it as mildly as I can.

Comment by cpl | 2008-09-06 12:23:04

Not being a woman I can only say it seems as if it would be wrong for a woman NOT to have those tests done if she can afford it. Afterall isn’t it all about the well being of the baby and the mother? But there again I think that is a personel matter that only the mother should decide and all others be damned. We have all taken sick children to doctors, so why not the not yet born be afforded the same care.

I think the contradiction between Obama’s Schiavo vote and his “Born Alive” vote indicates the guy doesn’t actually believe in anything. He does whatever he thinks is most politically expedient at the moment. As he himself said, any reflection on the meaning of life is “above his pay grade.” This is fundamentally why he scares me. He has no moral compass at all - there is no predicting what he will do.

Comment by Hope Floats | 2008-09-06 12:03:53

His church made him vote the way he did on Born Alive. That is why the vote buying corrupt Chicago Machine, of which TUCC serves as an arm, is the last thing we need in Washington. We don’t need a community organizer like that in the White House. And if you are curious about Obama’s church and Christ Hospital, Jill Stanek has elaborated on the board members, Advocate Health, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright himself and most chillingly, Obama attacking Stanek when she testified about the killing of infants who survived abortions. When he cross-examined her, he sarcastically brought up a hoffific neo-natal Soilent Green killing room that they called a “Comfort Room” at Christ Hospital. It was to torment the parents who had these abortions gone awry with photographs, booties and blankets, ID bracelets and everything else that goes with a healthy and successful childbirth.

I could not agree more. He has no moral compass (and the DNC has no integrity anymore), and I think that makes him EXTREMELY dangerous. I may not agree with McCain/Palin on policy, but both of them seem to be honorable people. I cannot say that for Obama. No way.

Hey, Divine - AWESOME post! Oh, and that twit you mentioned with the “fetal alcohol” thing is EXACTLY the kind of people who seem to have swarmed to Obama. Another good reason not to support him, IMHO.

Animals, they are not human. Leastwise not in the sense of the word from which the word “humane” was derived.

Comment by The Divine Democrat | 2008-09-06 13:51:49

Thanks Amy! Yeah…they are a crude bunch, aren’t they. Not all of them, I know a lot of very nice Obama supporters who are intelligent and well mannered. Then there are the scum, those are the one’s I call Obamabots. The others I just call Obama supporters.

People like Obama are not civilized. No conscience. Animalistic bastards and any other nasty thing that can be said about people like him. I should not say animalistic because even animals protect their young. But of course Obama later qualified his thoughts on that matter when he said “I wouldn’t want my daughter SADDLED WITH A PROBLEM THAT SHE DID NOT WANT”.

Comment by AnnieCarmel | 2008-09-06 18:52:26

“punished by being forced to have a baby”. No connection with him that it would be his grandchild. I don’t want any future generation of my family aborted. Even as pro-choice. That would be my choice. I ask my grandsons to look for a woman as beautiful, loving, sweet, caring and responsible as their own mother. Good way to avoid abortion.

Comment by s. hall | 2008-09-06 11:56:12

I think we have to look at being pro-choice as being more than pro-abortion. Life is a choice also. I may not have chosen to have a down syndrome baby but I love Sarah more for the choice she made.

Comment by Ferd McBerfle | 2008-09-06 12:14:21

Indeed. I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this before, but she does walk her talk and that is a breath of fresh air.

Comment by bemused | 2008-09-06 11:57:20

This man had his conclusion first (Palin = bad) and wrote a spin backwards trying to justify that–probably he’s projecting his own conviction that the baby should have been aborted and can’t see that his conclusion is incompatible with her process.

Comment by Ferd McBerfle | 2008-09-06 12:10:44

Very astute post. He had an agenda and reverse-engineered information to fit that agenda. I see this sort of irrational argument all the time-from Obama’s androids.

“I’m not sure what specialty Doctor Rahul K. Parikh practices”

Pediatrics

That’s how he knew her odds in having a Downs Syndrome child were about 1 in 30.

There is no point in getting pissed about this until you talk to Palin’s doctor. Maybe he gave her a bum steer, maybe not and she willfully went ahead with a risky pregnancy. You don’t know, but no sweat, blogs aren’t usually reservoirs of reason, are they?

For me it’s enough that she profiles a latter-day Phyllis Schlafly. Schlafly hasn’t endorsed yet (she still lives) and I will find it interesting if she does.

Party on feminists.

Comment by The Divine Democrat | 2008-09-06 12:15:12

Smilin Jim- I knew the odds of having a DS baby and didn’t need to go to medical school to find out. I also knew about the importance of having these tests done, especially if you plan on keeping the baby. Again..without going to medical school. My point is, the guy is either a lousy doctor (and I’m not willing to pay to see how many malpractice suits he’s had filed against him) or, as I said before, the man purposely left out information in order to make Sarah look bad. His last sentence in that story tells it all…the man is of low moral character and a fraud.

Comment by Ferd McBerfle | 2008-09-06 12:40:02

He is not her doctor and has no business making any pronouncements at all. I’d say his interest begins and ends with his own agenda.

Comment by Steven Mather | 2008-09-06 13:35:26

Malpractise candidate-in-the-making, Dr Parikh misinterpreted the axiom “Physician, heal thyself” to mean “Physician, HEEL thyself,” which he further misinterpreted to mean that he should make himself into a heel. Proper practise of his Hippocratic oath would have lead him to forego speaking, i.e., hold back or heel himself. He should apologize and prescribe himself a high colonic as a means of healing himself.

Comment by Smilin' Jim | 2008-09-06 15:14:30

No sweat, no one (well at least not everyone) believes blogs to be reservoirs of enlightenment.

Johnson, has this been a false flag demo for Berg all these months? If so, you have my admiration and my compliments.
