McCain/Palin Rides Post Convention Bounce To A Commanding 54%-44% lead Over Obama/Biden!!!!!

Breaking News: As of three hours ago, McCain/Palin beat Obama/Biden in a new USA Today/Gallup Poll 54%-44%.

palin.jpgAccording to a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken over the weekend shows, as running mate Sarah Palin helps close an “enthusiasm gap” that has dogged the GOP all year. The USA Today reported three hours ago that the McCain/Palin ticket has taken a significant lead over Obama/Biden.

The poll figures are as follows:

McCain leads Democrat Barack Obama by 50%-46% among registered voters, the Republican’s biggest advantage since January and a turnaround from the USA TODAY poll taken just before the convention opened in St. Paul. Then, he lagged by 7 percentage points.

Not only has the popularity of the McCain/Palin ticket increased, but the view of down ticket Republicans has improved. More on that from USA Today.

“The Republicans had a very successful convention and, at least initially, the selection of Sarah Palin has made a big difference,” says political scientist Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia. “He’s in a far better position than his people imagined he would be in at this point.”

McCain still has problems with people worried that he will continue the Bush style of government. People need to be reminded consistently, that McCain has already distanced himself from Bush. McCain is the real deal, a real maverick, working across the aisle on bills. Yet doubts remain.

In the new poll taken over the weekend, the numbers have changed significantly. And here are those numbers:

In the new poll, taken Friday through Sunday, McCain leads Obama by 54%-44% among those seen as most likely to vote. The survey of 1,022 adults, including 959 registered voters, has a margin of error of +/— 3 points for both samples.

Among the findings:

• Before the convention, Republicans by 47%-39% were less enthusiastic than usual about voting. Now, they are more enthusiastic by 60%-24%, a sweeping change that narrows a key Democratic advantage. Democrats report being more enthusiastic by 67%-19%.

• Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a national unknown before McCain chose her for the ticket 10 days ago, draws a strong reaction from voters on both sides. Now, 29% say she makes them more likely to vote for McCain, 21% less likely.

Obama’s choice of Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as running mate made 14% more likely to vote for the Democrat, 7% less likely.

• McCain’s acceptance speech Thursday received lower ratings than the one Obama gave a week earlier: 15% called McCain’s speech “excellent” compared with 35% for Obama.

This is an incredible bounce post-convention. Though bounces generally hang on, this is still awesome! It seems McCain’s choice of Governor Sarah Palin was the right one. Bravo McCain/Palin, good job!

Comment by Jim S | 2008-09-08 13:13:33

Country First? Tell that to Congress!

From the NumbersUSA website:

No sooner had the Labor Day speeches extolling American workers ceased than the leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives decided to bring up a bill this week to inflict 550,000 stab wounds onto those American workers.

That’s right: A week after we hear that official unemployment is at a 5-year high, House leaders are going to try to move a bill to offer 550,000 MORE permanent greencards, above the 1 million immigrants already planned!

Way to go Nancy, sell the American worker down the drain. They’re so sure that Democrats will fall in line and vote a straight democrat ticket that they cut our throats before we even vote. I intend to vote, but I’m voting McCain/Palin for President/VP and anyone else that is running against an incumbent. There is no Dem/Repub this time around. We should clean house and start over. As far as I’m concerned, that is “Country First”

Don’t be so hard on poor Michelle.

If the only Americans I hung around with were folks like Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, Toni Rezko, Richard Daley, the elitist snobs at Princeton, the greedy management of Univ. of Chicago Hospital and the nut roots smear mongers at the DailyKos, I would probably have a dim view of America too.

Those folks are certainly all “downright mean” and nothing to be proud of.

If she would only get to know some real Americans, I’m sure she would love her country.

Comment by IvyLeaguer | 2008-09-07 23:58:08

Doubt she hung out with the elitists at Princeton. There is an awful lot of nice folks there, smart, nice, and genuine. She most likely surrounded herslf in her comfort zone of like-mindedness. And didn’t bother to savor the great aspects and other people there.

Comment by Dan | 2008-09-07 22:30:25

As happy as I am to see this (I am, after all, A a Republican) this margin probably won’t be maintained. The post-convention “bump” for McCain & Palin will probably fade in time just like the one for Obama did. Still, I think that McCain is in a very good position indeed right now.

By and large, the people who will decide this election are middle-class and lower-middle-class whites. A lot of them are still undecided, and that’s why McCain’s pick of Palin as his VP was a stroke of genius. These people will easily see her as being “one of us” and, combined with a bona fide war hero who isn’t afraid of stepping on toes within his own party if that’s what it takes, it makes for a very formidable ticket.

The three debates between McCain and Obama will be critical. But the unscripted, give & take format of a debate is an environment in which McCain excels and in which Obama has had trouble in the past. As we all know, Obama gives terrific speeches in front of adoring crowds, but when pressed to answer specific questions on the spot, he often gets flustered and every other word turns into “ummm” or “uh”.

Then there’s the “Bradley effect” which, at the minimum, will probably be worth 2-3 percentage points for McCain.

There’s a long way to go yet and anything can happen. But if I were putting money down today on who will end up winning on Nov. 5th, I’d definitely bet on John McCain & Sarah Palin.

Comment by Vince P | 2008-09-07 22:34:56

I think Mr McCain has to get a concrete narrative going.

I think our govt is in a financial meltdown. He has to stress that we’ll be in emergency and that he will work right away on the money side, and that the Palin will immediately move with energy production.

I hven’t heard the speech they give so i have no what they say.

And then a plan for how to deal with Nancy Stretch Pelosi

Comment by JohninCA | 2008-09-07 22:59:30

Yeah, I would say eight trillion in debt with a half trillion deficit is a meltdown.

Still, I hope Sarah knows what to do with those that would see another Republican administration as an invitation to rape and pillage the middle class, yet again.

We’re gonna need a maverick and a reformer for sure.

If the Republicans don’t get off their aszes and register more voters O-pie hole will win by sheer numbers.

Especially with Soros’ “Vote America” and Barky’s ACORN to which he’s still funneling money–they are busy I’m sure making up names for scores of fake voter registrations (AGAIN). They’ll have to get creative, they already used up “Mr. Jive Turkey”.

Comment by For Impartial Journalism | 2008-09-08 02:22:03

I think it was a separate question just about how one rated the speech (excellent, good, fair, poor?)?

As far as stagecraft and eloquence, most would rate Obama’s speech better than McCain’s.

Of course, IMHO, as far as truth, character, straight talk, and sincerity, I would vote McCain’s the best. :)

Thank you NancyA for providing the information.

Comment by Chicago Joe | 2008-09-07 22:35:54

Obama’s bounce was predicted to be as high as `15%, but that never materialized. This actually may reflect the fact that he had soft support, and people were looking for another option. Though the Palin pick may have been ostensibly an overt play for women, they are finding that men really like her and might be more enthusiastic about voting for McCain. What a difference a day makes. And I think it is karmic because Barry was all that when he was new…..and now he ain’t the new one anymore!

I was at a high school football game Friday night, sitting in front of some very elderly gentlemen. The topic of discussion turned to politics. These men were thrilled with McCain’s pick for VP!! The other day, an elderly guy who rents our pasture, stopped by to visit. He brought up politics, and he too was THRILLED with Sarah Palin.

I agree with the poster up thread. I’m even MORE proud of my country knowing that many see through Sen. Obama and are ready to embrace a woman VP. I only wish it was Hillary at the top of the ticket being embraced.

Creationism and evolution are not mutually exclusive. Sarah has said that Creationism should not be taught as a subject, but if it came up, it should be discussed.

I went to public, and Catholic schools. We discussed creation in Public schools, and studied natural histoy in Catholic school.

Einstein said that the more he learned about science, the more he believed in a creator.

Comment by pbsc | 2008-09-08 03:36:41

So true. Palin has plainly never said that evolution should not be taught, and she only wants communities and parents deciding whether or not to allow a discussion of creationism in the classroom if it comes up. I can live with that.
