Obama’s Con Job Destined to Break a Lot of Hearts

changeringwindow2-2.jpg
Gotta love that marketing! Voting for President is more than just a civic responsibility. It’s cool, too! First, behold The ChangeRing. Then, behold why it is a problem:

A wearable symbol of “change” that is becoming a cult hit in Obamaland. Originally designed to be a wearable key-chain … young Obamaphiles have also taken to hanging it from a necklace or strapping it on their wrist.

Driving its movement around the country is that it is sold as “buy one/give one” and people are passing it to their friends and family members.

Another thing that makes The ChangeRing so compelling is the multi-layered story that has been woven into the product: the ring and its packaging are made in America from recycled materials … with an SMS lost-key tracking system. The ChangeRing also comes in a re-usable package. …

The ChangeRing has also produced the first full musical compilation in support of Obama: 14 Change cover songs … by various American artists [downloadable] on the website.

Celebrities reportedly wearing The ChangeRing: Susan Sarandon, Cuba Gooding Jr, Nick Cannon, Mary-Kate Olsen, Kelly Carlson, Tim Robbins, Ashley Simpson, … Pharell Williams and N.E.R.D., Alan Cumming, Hayden Panettier, Josh Lucas, Kerry Washington, Matthew Modine, Pras (Fugees), Apl.de.ap (Black Eyed Peas), … Jessica Alba. …

[G]o to www.thechangering.com

The website is urban, hip and young, with lots of teens and twenty-somethings wearing the ChangeRing sticking out of the back pocket of their very snug jeans. KEWL!

That’s American ingenuity I guess. Find a way to commercialize everything, even our Commander in Chief. Lord knows being cool and looking cool is far more important that actually voting for someone who has a clue what they are doing.

But let’s forget about poking fun or wondering if this is cultish. That isn’t the point. I am by nature as New Age-y as the next person and although I have never been an Obama supporter, I would celebrate change, too. Certainly there is something romantic about being a member of this special club that is out to heal the planet. Others of us also want to heal the planet. We just don’t wear a cool ring while we’re doing it. We also know that real change is achieved through slow, painstaking, consistent action.

With the exception of those in Obama’s camp who would use any cause as an excuse to hate and be cruel to others, there are certainly voters supporting him who have a sincere agenda. They actually believe his rhetoric. These are good, honest, decent people.

They are just being conned.

What angers me about this seemingly innocuous piece of jewelry is that it’s based on a con.

Being conned is something I know something about. I’ve been voting a straight Democratic ticket for thirty years, but the behavior I have seen exhibited by the DNC this year finally sent me over the edge:

To plot and plan so that the best candidate could be thrown under the bus in favor of a charlatan, to deny fair reflection, to give the earned delegates of one candidate to another with impunity, to condone caucus fraud and misogyny to propel your own selfish agenda, to allow two Democrats who have done more for the Party than any anyone to be called racists…

In answer to that behavior, on June 7th, I stood at the post office with my new voter registration card, tears rolling down my face, and registered as an Independent. I have always been a Democrat. No more. I was conned.

Why bring this up here? Because I was naïve enough to actually believe that Democrats held the moral high ground. Maybe they’re a bit spineless but they don’t fight ‘dirty like the Republicans’ cause they’re too nice, they’re just not as good at it.

Yes, naïve, I know, but that is what I truly believed. No wonder I felt sick inside. Thirty years is a long time.

Now please go back and reread the above sales pitch for the ChangeRing. Sure, to some kids it’s just a fad and sixth months from now it will just be another piece of metal haphazardly thrown in their whatnot drawer. And yeah, the tracking device is kind of creepy. We’ve got enough big-brother in this country. None of that is my worry.

The worry is there are those who actually believe the hopium he’s been selling. That’s why cons are the worst kind of theft. Obama’s con involves the theft of idealism.

Senator Obama truly is politics as usual. He is a product of the corrupt Daley political machine; the media creation of his campaign manager David Axelrod; well marketed, kind of like the ultra slick ChangeRing website.

But one of these days, after the pundits and media whores realize they need a new way to make a buck, all the facts will finally be exposed about him. To sell more papers, they will tell the truth. Honestly, I feel sympathy for those who believe in Obama because it will be a very dark day for them.

Likewise, it will be a very dark day for some friends of mine, a comfortable couple in their fifties with Obama’s HOPE poster proudly displayed in their front window. Maybe they’ve already bought two companion ChangeRings, although they won’t look as cool as the teens wearing it, it will mean just as much if not more to them.

And then they’ll find out they were conned.

Now please fast forward to ten years from now. Someone else might come along: black, white, bi-racial, Latina, Asian, Indian, man or woman. And that person will likewise have a positive message.

The difference perhaps, is that with this future candidate, maybe it won’t be “words, just words.” Maybe he or she will actually have the goods to back it up. But being that your naïve heart has already been broken with the charlatan Obama, you won’t believe it. And that will be a grave loss. I feel empathy for those citizens who have been taken in by Obama’s nonsense. To some degree, I understand why they have.

Democrats have been wandering like nomads in the desert for eight years dying for a drink of water, feeling unrepresented and unseen, listening to an inexperienced, arrogant boob say “nuke-u-lar” and “Mission Accomplished”, unable to string two coherent sentences together. War mongering. Lying.

Add to that, Obama, Axelrod and Company did a great job selling us on the idea that a new face will kill the dynasties of Bush/Clinton and usher in a post-partisan warm, fuzzy feeling in the White House. Actually, only the Bushes are a dynasty. The Clintons are a married couple. No matter. We need CHANGE!!

And then there were the uber-rallies and the rhapsodic speeches…A teleprompter! A teleprompter! My kingdom for a teleprompter!!

People had a desperate need to believe. And the mainstream media helped make the sale.

Is it any wonder that Obamania took hold?

The Change Ring is just a little token of Senator Obama’s con job. He and Axelrod have foisted American Idol on us, not someone really equipped to govern. But what goes up must come down and it is quite obvious that the toy has lost its luster. I just hope when everybody finally wakes up, they don’t use it as an excuse to turn away from the process altogether.

We need people to be involved if we are ever going to get our country back from special interests and people like David Axelrod and Barack Obama, who use our pain to sell us a product.

To me it really looks like a paint can opener that’s been twisted back on itself. I have one in the garage! Wow! I was ahead of the fad! You can get one too for about $1.98 at your local hardware store!

Now that’s change you can believe in.

Comment by Liz B | 2008-09-16 23:13:10

I get your point. It’s almost as bad as finding out your first true love was lying, cheating and only told you that he (or she_ loved you so he (or she) could get you in bed. It takes a long time to recover from a broken heart. you are only truly naive, once…when it happens again and again you become disillusioned and eventually bitter.

But on the upside, once you become those things then you can apparently judge political candidates with clearer vision, and apparently you’ll find God and develop a fondness for firearms!

This crap has a tracking device? Why not just get the mark of the beast on your forehead and be done with it?

Comment by AF catfish | 2008-09-16 23:32:09

And to activate the tracking, you fill in your name, gender, home state, and whether you’re registered to vote.

Why not the real thing then? I knew a girl that used to wear an IUD on a necklace. The thing is ten years from now people will ask, “What is that?” and you can tell them it’s one of the birth control devices Obama helped make illegal.

Q: Is the ChangeRing directly associated with Barack Obama’s campaign?
A: No. While The ChangeRing was inspired by Barack Obama’s message of change and created in support of his run for the White House, it is not directly associated with his campaign. Part of the proceeds from the sale of The ChangeRing will be donated to the campaign. You can track our progress on The ChangeRing Tracker Map and also on barackobama.com and also help us by donating through our donation tracking page at: http://my.barackobama.com/page/dashboard/public/gDhMs

according to the website - don’t let the facts get in the way of your smear though.

Comment by Hill Dem 4 McPalin | 2008-09-16 22:58:46

Why is every critical analysis of Obama a “smear”? That is so bizarre. The word is so overused now that it’s become meaningless.

Better check your ring Maddie, maybe they’re “tracking” you too, but whatever you do, don’t spend too much time looking at the “Change Ring Tracker Map” you might not have enough time to check your Lucky Charms Cereal box for prizes and don’t forget Cracker Jack - they have some pretty KEWL rings in there too, only I don’t think they have tracker maps…sorry.

They won’t be wearing them forever anyway. Once the election’s over, whether Obama wins or loses, they’ll stop wearing them and move on to something else.

My local Repub party chair returned my call this evening. I will be going in tomorrow to volunteer to elect McCain, and while there will change my registration from Dem to Independent. A very sad day. My first campaign was Carter. Will never forget how happy my Mother was (bless her sweet soul) the day she got to meet Jimmy and Rosalind. Time passes. We move on to do the right thing. I am ashamed of my party, and no longer want to be called a liberal. Their treatment of Sarah Palin is disgraceful. Their treatment of Hillary was nothing compared to this. I guess they were just getting warmed up. The Hollywood crowd is particulary disgusting. So many movies I won’t be seeing, so many songs I won’t be hearing.

Comment by Vicki | 2008-09-17 01:20:05

You can always buy used movies or music, or exchange them through swapaDVD.com or swapaCD.com. LOL, no royalties! Course, you do have to look at their idiot faces or hear their idiot voices. You could maybe switch to country music, or classical produced in Eastern Europe. Or check out ssmunch.com for individual downloadable music.

It frustrates me too. I don’t watch many movies any more.

Ani, I always relate to your posts. Don’t worry too much about the future candidate who is authentic and not a bullying phony. I am always amazed at the number of people who cannot see through the masks of phonies. But when someone is authentic, it is hard not to see the authenticity. That’s what we all saw in Hillary of the pantsuits.

I do wonder at our inability to create real leaders in this country lately. They say our thoughts precede reality. Let’s keep envisioning two leaders–McCain and Hillary (as the leader of the Senate, or maybe as someone in his cabinet–finally breaking this long run of great animosity between the parties and leading us to a new prosperity and a resurrection of renewed American greatness.

Is O.J. Causing Obama To Tank?

There seems to be a correlation between the ongoing robbery trial of O.J. Simpson, which is unfolding before our eyes… and the presidential trial of Democratic nominee Barack Obama. How ironic that everyday O.J.’s smirking face is on television… as he sits in that Las Vegas courtroom facing robbery, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and coercion charges… Obama’s poll numbers keep tanking. What??? New York and New Jersey are now in play!

Say what you will, but the 1995 O.J. Simpson murder trial was one of the most racially divisive events in the history of this nation. The lingering effects of that trial’s verdict can still be felt, as racial tensions hover across America like a wet blanket.

In light of that reality… who scheduled this ‘new’ Simpson trial to run concurrent with the final 47-days of the Obama presidential campaign? Did no one think to postpone O.J.’s memorabilia ‘thug’ trial until after November––especially considering O.J. and Obama both are experiencing national ire for the perception of one (literally) and the other [figuratively] having killed-off a blond, talented white women… and a hero White male?

Not good timing!

Let’s think about it. How many Whites remain chafed, angry, and will not ever vote for Obama because they feel he (with the help of the biased media) smugly and arrogantly gamed the system, and got away with robbing Hillary of her place in history… and now, has the audacity to set his sights on taking out America’s war hero John McCain as well?

Then, how many of those same Whites, harbor subliminal anger, as they are reminded each day via television, of how another good-looking African American man, (who with the help of the late Johnny ‘if it don’t fit, you must acquit’ Cochran) smugly and arrogantly gamed the system and got away with the murder of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman?

Those once media darlings, O.J. and Obama, although not by their own choosing, are on simultaneous tracks, as both are now on trial and are currently being judged by their peers. Will one walk and one win? Now, that would be utopia for both.

But I wouldn’t bet the farm. There remains the chance that O.J. and Obama will each go down in defeat… big time! The jury is still out on both.

Comment by richasis | 2008-09-16 23:34:27

ESPECIALLY IN LIGHT OF THE BARKO CAMPAIGN CO-CHAIR’S COMMENTS:

The change ring is a very clever idea to get a little money for his camp and tie his base together. I don’t believe I have seen a single follower with any humility. They were told by the media very early in the primaries they were intellectually and financially superior to Hillary’s supporters and they bought the hype. Not only do they lack compassion for the poor and lower middle class, they never miss an opportunity to call them “low information” voters and they realy don’t seem to be interested in improving the quality of life for others. Elite groups are exclusive, not inclusive. Maybe this is why Obama and followers have found it difficult to reach out to others even though they can’t win the election without them. I agree with you Ani. This is not the Democratic Party I thought I knew or the principles they claimed to represent in the past. Thanks for this intuitive post.

There is an interesting ‘unofficial’ Obama strategy site here:
http://www.obamaco.com/2008/09/16/the-eight-things-that-will-win-or-lose-this-election-for-barack-obama/

I like this little nugget and I think I will send it to friends in some swing states to see how they like to have their intelligence insulted some more by Obama supporters:

“First, they have the naïve belief that the American electorate is intelligent, and that it will be able to sort out the lies from the truths of the campaign trail. But, as experience has shown over and over again, the electorate is not intelligent. It will believe what it is told by politicians, especially politicians who know how to tell their story and how to make up stories that, because of their plausibility, can become believable narratives (remember the Bosnian sniper story Hillary told in the primaries?). Thus, in the arena of campaign politics, victory generally belongs to those politicians who are best able to shape public opinion around their (misleading and/or not so misleading) narratives. John McCain seems to have accomplished this more successfully, and more effectively, than Barack Obama.”

The funny thing is, they could be saying this about their own followers couldn’t they? All they have is the story from the two books and the myth crafted by Emil Jones in Chicago. They don’t want to hear anything that contradicts the story line.

Here is another:

“Second, the Obama campaign seems to rely heavily on media inquiry and reports. Its belief seems to be that the media will collaborate in exposing the lies and misleading characterizations in the McCain/Palin narrative. This, again, is a very naïve belief. The media and pundits of America are, just like the rest of us, citizens with ideologies, preferences and sets of beliefs that do not necessarily lead to objective analysis. As a result, they are as much as the rest of us likely to be wowed by the personal stories and histories that fascinate our post-rational America (as Rachel Maddow of MSNBC likes to put it), a post-rational America of debased punditry, fallen journalism, bedazzled electorate, and Hollywoodized media. In fact, by simply making Sarah Palin the story of the day (or of the next 50 days), the media are, consciously or unconsciously, contributing to the shaping of public opinion about and around Sarah Palin. This means less coverage for Barack Obama and less coverage of the issues of substance that really matter.”

This idea has been getting a lot of play lately. The media is actually against Obama. The McCain campaign has manipulated them. Apparently, McCain is so brilliant that he made them all write stories of Palin being power-hungry, a bad mother, a whore, a zealot, a book burner, and hiding her daughter’s pregnancy in order to shift the coverage to her. McCain, that wily dog, convinced them to descend into Alaska to dig up dirt from every saloon, hair salon and coffee shop in Wasilla, all the while making sure that they didn’t go near Chicago–that sneaky old guy. I am sure it was the Clintons who made the media behave the way they did to them as well–we all know Bill and Hillary’s history of being racists right? Those Clintons are sneaky too.

I am starting to see one of the fall-back plans. It was the media’s fault because they are dupes for McCain and the Clintons. Poor old Obama and Axelrod are as pure as the driven snow, other than the fact that they only know how to run one kind of campaign and it may not work on the national level.

You should definitely read their post. One last line: “As odd as it may seem, one of the biggest problems for Obama is that his campaign seems to know how to function only in one mode, and this mode is a passive/defensive one.”

I think they mean passive-aggressive.

I have to add one more, it is too funny, and at this point I thought is was a joke. I did, however, read to the end and I now think it is serious–but still very funny:

6) Campaign Trail Speeches and the Teleprompter: The teleprompter made Obama. No politician in America matches Obama’s oratory when it comes to standing in front of a microphone and a teleprompter. Yet, the Obama campaign has, very often, been cornered by the McCain campaign into believing that the teleprompter is a bad thing.

Does anyone not find that first sentence the essence of the problem? This was a lot of wasted effort. Move point number 6 to point number 1, eliminate all but the first sentence and call it a day.

One more:

5. (On the experience factor regarding Obama vs. Palin; this line should be used by Joe Biden)
“There is a fundamental difference between Barack Obama and Sarah Palin that does not even call for a debate. After beating the most experienced field of Democratic candidates that this country has to offer, Barack Obama was voted into presidential candidacy by 18 million Americans in a competitive race in which they believed he was ready to be Commander-in-Chief. Sarah Palin was nominated into Vice-Presidency by John McCain.”

http://www.obamaco.com/2008/08/31/small-punchlines-barack-obama-could-use-against-john-mccain-to-beat-him-to-the-punch/

I love the ‘after beating the most experienced field of Democratic candidates” line. That is rich.

I just found this little piece of info on a little government website:
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/record.xpd?id=109-s20060525-16&bill=s109-190#sMonofilemx003Ammx002Fmmx002Fmmx002Fmhomemx002Fmgovtrackmx002Fmdatamx002Fmusmx002Fm109mx002Fmcrmx002Fms20060525-16.xmlElementm0m0m0m

Mr. President, this week Fannie Mae’s regulator reported that the company’s quarterly reports of profit growth over the past few years were “illusions deliberately and systematically created” by the company’s senior management, which resulted in a $10.6 billion accounting scandal.

The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight’s report goes on to say that Fannie Mae employees deliberately and intentionally manipulated financial reports to hit earnings targets in order to trigger bonuses for senior executives. In the case of Franklin Raines, Fannie Mae’s former chief executive officer, OFHEO’s report shows that over half of Mr. Raines’ compensation for the 6 years through 2003 was directly tied to meeting earnings targets. The report of financial misconduct at Fannie Mae echoes the deeply troubling $5 billion profit restatement at Freddie Mac.

The OFHEO report also states that Fannie Mae used its political power to lobby Congress in an effort to interfere with the regulator’s examination of the company’s accounting problems. This report comes some weeks after Freddie Mac paid a record $3.8 million fine in a settlement with the Federal Election Commission and restated lobbying disclosure reports from 2004 to 2005. These are entities that have demonstrated over and over again that they are deeply in need of reform.

For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac–known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs–and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEO’s report this week does nothing to ease these concerns. In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEO’s report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.

I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.

I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation.

Guess who said these words back in 2005 when Fannie and Freddie were still lobbying the Republicans?

Just saw this on a post on PUMA’s blog:

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Lynn Forester de Rothschild, a prominent Hillary Clinton supporter and member of the Democratic National Committee’s Platform Committee, will endorse John McCain for president on Wednesday, her spokesman tells CNN.

I will always remember that line she said in her interview during the summer about barry “…frankly, I don’t like the guy.” Well said my lady.

Don’t these idiots realize that this just makes Obama less appealing to most Americans? Most Americans don’t want a celebrity for a president. They want someone who is taken seriously and can fix things. They don’t want someone that sells jewelry to twenty-something hipsters and Hollywood celebrities. This is a horrible move but maybe it just shows how desperate they are for money.

Comment by Snickers | 2008-09-17 02:03:24

actually a lot of Americans like having celebrities in political power. I note Ronald Reagan and Arnie.

The Obama campaign has no affiliation at all with the “Change Ring”. They are just using his name to try and make a buck. That’s obvious just by looking at the “Change Ring” site.

From the sites FAQ:

Q: Is the ChangeRing directly associated with Barack Obama’s campaign?

A: No. While The ChangeRing was inspired by Barack Obama’s message of change and created in support of his run for the White House, it is not directly associated with his campaign. Part of the proceeds from the sale of The ChangeRing will be donated to the campaign.

And the sneaky SOBs are even duping poor, naive, trusting Bambi into giving them space on his site to “[use] his name to try and make a buck.” That’s obvious just by looking at the Obama site:

By the way, the first anti-Obama ads from BornAliveTruth.org started running in Ohio and New Mexico today.
