Alcee Hastings loses his right to call others bigoted

Remember Alcee Hastings? He’s a US Representative from FL who was impeached when a federal judge and subsequently voted into Congress (HOW does that happen?). Need a reminder? During a trial for bribery and perjury, Hastings was acquitted after a co-conspirator refused to testify.

From Wikipedia:

In 1988, the Democratic-controlled U.S. House of Representatives took up the case, and Hastings was impeached for bribery and perjury by a vote of 413-3. Voters to impeach included Democratic Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, John Conyers and Charles Rangel. He was then convicted in 1989 by the United States Senate, becoming the sixth federal judge in the history of the United States to be removed from office by the Senate.

Well, a couple days ago, Hastings was speaking to a group of Jewish Democrats and exhorted them to vote for Obama because Palin is dangerous.

OK, he didn’t say “dangerous.” I paraphrased. This is what he said according to CNN:

“If Sarah Palin isn’t enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention,” Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida said at a panel about the shared agenda of Jewish and African-American Democrats Wednesday. Hastings, who is African-American, was explaining what he intended to tell his Jewish constituents about the presidential race. “Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through,” Hastings added as the room erupted in laughter and applause.

Hastings clearly was speaking to a sympathetic audience and thought he could “let his [completely metaphoric] hair down.” I guess this is why:

The support of Jewish voters is shaping up to be a highly sought after prize in the general election match-up between Sen. Obama and Sen. John McCain. Jews have historically favored Democrats by wide margins in recent presidential races. But, the McCain campaign is making a concerted effort to go after the loyal Democratic constituency and Obama has been plagued by false Internet rumors that he is Muslim which have had particular salience in the Jewish community.

So, is it just Alaskans in general or only Sarah Palin who couldn’t care less about Jews and blacks? I guess Alcee forgot that old saying that when you point one finger at someone else, 3 point back at you.

Thank you for this, Lisa.

Hastings was great during the primaries when his home state was robbed of its vote. It’s a tragedy to see him become just another race pimp for the Chicago Fraud now. Sad stuff.

.

Three post-debate videos I made. The first two are of one series, with myself giving a quick audio recap of the night’s proceedings:

The final video is a recap of some of the headlines on various newspaper articles proclaiming McCain’s victory in the debate set the the song “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. I also do a brief audio spot in the video:

It’s official: McCain wins first debate in Mississippi

When Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House, she was able to make some congressional appointments. Her fellow CA democratic Congresswoman, Jane Harman was in line to get one of the appointments because of seniority. It was publicized that Pelosi probably would not appoint Harman because their dislike of each other was well known. Instead, Pelosi wanted to appoint Alcee Hastings. Even though Hastings problems around his impeachment was revisited, and Pelosi was roundly criticized for this selection, she stuck with him.

This is yet another example of Pelosi being a part of the good o’le boys that include A-A men and couldn’t care less about the inclusion of women. Remember how fiercely she worked against Hillary while pretending to be ‘neutral’.

he’s got alot of nerve. He’s a criminal and he’s dissing Sarah Palin, the Governor of Alaska w a 85% + approval rating?? I wouldn’t even attend an event w someone of that low character speaking. I can’t believe millions of people have that low of expectations in someone to run this country by supporting Obama.

Alcee is just another version of mayor Marion Barry - someone who should be in jail but isn’t

But he’s AA so he can spew all the racist crap imaginable and be applauded by folks who would lynch a white man if he said the same things.

In 1981, Hastings was charged with accepting a $150,000 bribe in exchange for a lenient sentence and a return of seized assets for 21 counts of racketeering by Frank and Thomas Romano, and of perjury in his testimony about the case. He was acquitted by a jury after his alleged co-conspirator, William Borders, refused to testify in court (resulting in a jail sentence for Borders).

Another Obama thug along with Robert Wexler. I wish we could get rid of the garbage down here in South Florida. Wexler will be voted out in November, I only hope we never have to hear from Hastings again.

maybe he can become a traning staff for ACORN

Kind of interesting how this is shaping into a battle between the meat eaters and the arugula eaters. Still, I’d rather eat moose burgers then bullsh&t.

There’s incredible sexism around hunting, or is it really all about a woman possibly having a gun? Anyway, who can forget John Kerry in his ridiculous orange cap? Or Huckabee out shooting varmints? Hunting while male is a way to pander to voters, hunting while female is apparently downright evil.

Good point LisaB, why does the impeached Alcee Hastings think he’s qualified to critisize the Gov of Alaska?

Comment by C.S. | 2008-09-27 08:11:08

There’s incredible sexism around hunting, or is it really all about a woman possibly having a gun?

My opinion is that it’s more about women being out of the kitchen and succeeding in politics without the boost of Affirmative Action. Representative Hastings is ignoring, or unaware of, all those women who helped build this country wagon train by wagon train who “stripped” not just moose but buffalo, deer and even some bear to feed their families.

And we all know that even though the towns and cities of Alaska may look like ours, most of us don’t have bear and moose wandering into our backyards where our children play. I think Hastings is just miffed that not only is Palin sending the wrong “message” (like Senator Clinton did) to women everywhere but she’s making Soertoto/Obama look even weaker because she is stronger and has survived in a wilderness state while Soeroto/Obama led a cushy life in Hawaii and Chicago. We can all imagine what would happen if Hastings’ upbringing was make fun of.

And as for that Jewish audience he spoke to, I doubt they were naive enough to take what he said at face value because they know their own history and are good at identifying bamboozlers who use anti-Semitism as persuasion.

Comment by OhVoter | 2008-09-27 07:53:31

Lately, my number one reason (out of 20 or so) for voting for John McCain has become to cast a protest vote AGAINST THE MEDIA. Alcee Hastings, in a crude and demeaning manner, called Sarah Palin a racist and an anti-semite.

Have we heard any outrage from the media? Forget about outrage - have we heard any reporting about this from the mainstream media? Can you imagine if a republican senator had publically said the same thing about Joe Biden? Can you even imagine the feeding frenzy the media would be in for weeks?

Right now, in concert and in lock-step the media is informing all those voters who did not see the debate that Obama won the debate hands down. They are trying to shape the views of so many busy voters who only have time, or interest, in headlines. It makes me physically ill!!!

Media bias and manipulation was a contributing factor in the defeat of Hillary. The media is now working even harder to elect Obama and destroy McCain and Palin. Sometimes I don’t feel I am even living in a Democracy anymore. Isn’t a controlled, and controlling media a sign that our country is in real trouble?

I used to say my vote for John McCain will be a protest against the Democratic Party - and that is true. But now, more importantly, my vote is REBELLION against the mind control and manipulation being perpetrated by our corrupt media.

Comment by C.S. | 2008-09-27 09:30:11

Our Founding Fathers believed that a free press was so necessary to protect democracy that they wrote it in the Bill of Rights and we’ve learned the hard way that even our Bill of Right isn’t sacrosanct without constant vigilance.

In 1947 the Fairness Doctrine was created by the Federal Communications Commission and “required broadcasters to cover controversial issues with some opposing views…” and to present “both viewpoints of any initiative…

In 1987, Congress considered a bill that would inscribe the Fairness Doctrine in federal law. It passed with overwhelming support in the House (3 to 1) and the Senate (nearly 2 to 1)…

Reagan vetoed the law, and then went a step further: his FCC repealed the Fairness Doctrine completely. Reagan had staffed the FCC with corporate media types who were bent on deregulating the media at all costs…

http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/L-liberalmedia.htm

This site has a good synopsis of the Fairness Doctrine but there are others with the same information about why it’s Obama News 24/7.

Ironic that so much of what has gone wrong with our democracy can be traced back to the Reagan years. It makes one wonder who was really making these decisions during his administration since his Alzhimers condition had already manifested. (Another example of refusing to remove an incompetent president.)

And this 2008 election isn’t the end result of corporate ownership of our media; it’s only pushing the envelope. Regardless of who finally takes that oath of office; and if the Bush 2000 election is an accurate barometer and if the 2008 primary steal isn’t the proof that it will be Soertoro/Obama regardless of the voters will; we need to elect people who will ensure a fair and unbiased media to regain control of our democracy. Reinstating the Fairness Doctrine with federal penalties for those who abuse their journalistic power and returning to an iron clad “no monopolies” law is a start.

Who would be campaigning for president of the United States today if media and political parties hadn’t colluded to ignore the election criteria set forth in our Constitution? I totally disagree that this election has anything to do with race; it’s about selecting a candidate that can be manipulated by the promise of money and power. Which explains the continuing “Hillary Hate”.

I have a different read on this debate. It is pretty clear than when you subtract the bias the viewers pretty much thought it was a draw. Yawn. Now those who believe that Obama is really 4 points ahead might take that as a good sign. They see McCain as the one who needs to catch up and believe he didn’t do any catching up last night. But that’s a fallacy. At this point Obama should have a 10 point lead and the fact that he doesn’t means he is behind. Adjust for the oversampling in the polls and the hidden Bradley and PUMA effects, and McCain clearly is in the driver’s seat. It is Obama who still has to sell himself to the very large pool of undecideds and he isn’t getting it done. So I look at it as one of Obama’s three best chances to accomplish that being down the drain.

Comment by Arabella Trefoil | 2008-09-27 08:11:25

Comment by Terry | 2008-09-27 09:53:51

I agree w/ Shiloh. McCain scored points with independents last night and that is what will make the difference in November.

If you came to the dabte liking BO, then you thought your guy did great. And similarly, if you’re a Mac supporter, you thought he did well.

Now, an independent would already be a BO supporter if that hopey-changey nonsense registered with him or her. Independents are looking for confirmation that McCain is not another Bush, that McCain is not senile and that McCain is not a crazy bomb-thrower. McCain showed that he is not any of those things. He is knowledgeable, cool & collected, has a sense of humor (especially about himself) while at the same time have a real grasp of the dangers lurking in the world. He reassured a lot of people last night that the liberal slanders about him are not true.

Game: McCain

I live in the Detroit area and have seen how people vote in Detroit, it’s easy to see how a CROOK like Alcee Hastings could get elected to Congress. He is probably from a mostly black district and many voters liked the idea that he “Got the Money” and “Beat the Man” by not getting convicted at Trial, most black folks were cheering when O.J. beat the rap too. In the last election for Mayor in Detroit most people knew Kwame kilpatrick was a liar and wasted City money living like a Rock-Star but he still got re-elected. Maybe it’s a sign of the Hip-Hop Gangster culture that has enveloped their community.

The Governor of MO has responded to the Obama Campaign tactics — this is great:

Gov. Blunt Statement on Obama Campaign’s Abusive Use of Missouri Law Enforcement

JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Matt Blunt today issued the following statement on news reports that have exposed plans by U.S. Senator Barack Obama to use Missouri law enforcement to threaten and intimidate his critics.

“St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch, St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer, and Obama and the leader of his Missouri campaign Senator Claire McCaskill have attached the stench of police state tactics to the Obama-Biden campaign.

“What Senator Obama and his helpers are doing is scandalous beyond words, the party that claims to be the party of Thomas Jefferson is abusing the justice system and offices of public trust to silence political criticism with threats of prosecution and criminal punishment.

“This abuse of the law for intimidation insults the most sacred principles and ideals of Jefferson. I can think of nothing more offensive to Jefferson’s thinking than using the power of the state to deprive Americans of their civil rights. The only conceivable purpose of Messrs. McCulloch, Obama and the others is to frighten people away from expressing themselves, to chill free and open debate, to suppress support and donations to conservative organizations targeted by this anti-civil rights, to strangle criticism of Mr. Obama, to suppress ads about his support of higher taxes, and to choke out criticism on television, radio, the Internet, blogs, e-mail and daily conversation about the election.

“Barack Obama needs to grow up. Leftist blogs and others in the press constantly say false things about me and my family. Usually, we ignore false and scurrilous accusations because the purveyors have no credibility. When necessary, we refute them. Enlisting Missouri law enforcement to intimidate people and kill free debate is reminiscent of the Sedition Acts - not a free society.”

Will the media touch this — I guess that’s a stupid question

By posting a picture of Hastings with Hillary in the background smiling and clapping at the top of their lead into this article, their aim is to give the impression that she was there when the comments were made and she agreed with Hastings.
