Women, Sexism, and Misogyny in the Media: The New Agenda

[Note: Amy Siskind of The New Agenda is the special guest on DCMediaGirl's Hour of Power, Tuesday, September 30, at 10:30pm ET on NQR.]

There has been a great deal of concern here and on many other blogs about the MSM and their over-the-top political bias, as well as their sexism and misogyny. I would like to give a heads-up on the work of a recently formed organization, The New Agenda.

This organization’s non-partisan aims are spelled out in their mission statement:

“The New Agenda, through its members and partner organizations, seeks to advance women’s rights. The New Agenda will bring about a systemic change in the way women are treated in the media, by the government, at the workplace, and at home. To achieve our goals, we will empower women by working towards parity in the government and in the workplace. The New Agenda will also formulate an agenda based on core women’s issues which we will promote in a non-partisan fashion. The New Agenda will speak out for the millions of women in this great country who often have no voice.”

Among the good deeds done so far are calling out the WSJ on labeling Sen. McCaskill “shrill” (9/20/08), and calling out Sen. Harry Reid’s press secretary’s characterization of Gov. Sarah Palin’s speech as “shrill” (9-04-8). (Don’t you wish these guys could find some other term besides “shrill?”) They also are “raising our collective eyebrow in puzzlement” at NOW’s endorsement of Obama. All letters are posted on their web site.

Their latest action is a letter sent to NBC which aims to bring to account the very not-endearing Chris Matthews for his egregious sexism and misogyny.

The letter was sent to NBC’s President and CEO, Jeff Zucker. In it, The New Agenda demands that action be taken against Matthews “to insure that this type of sexist journalism is no longer part of the NBC brand.”

They document the “on-air degradation of girls and women,” illustrating numerous examples of “deeply disrespectful, demeaning treatment of females.” Examples (edited) include:

  • Viewers have watched Matthews call Hillary Clinton a “she devil,” and repeatedly refer to her as “Nurse Ratched”
  • Matthews demeaned the accomplishments of Hillary Clinton by saying, “The reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around” and that “[s]he didn’t win [New York] on her merits.”
  • Chris Matthews also demeaned the accomplishments of all women stating he couldn’t think of a single female governor eligible to run for president.
  • Matthews’ sexist comments and critical comments are not limited to Clinton alone. He infamously asked Nancy Pelosi if she was “going to castrate Steny Hoyer.”
  • Sexist references abounded during MSNBC’s April 26 coverage of the first Democratic presidential candidates debate in the context of discussions about the only female candidate, Hillary Clinton. MSNBC host Chris Matthews focused on the appearances of Clinton and of Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle, to the point that NBC News Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell reminded him that they are Yale and Harvard-educated lawyers, respectively.
  • According to a Media Matters study, Matthews made 10 negative remarks about Hillary Clinton for every negative remark he made about Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, and nearly three times as many positive remarks about the former New York City mayor as about Clinton, despite his professed neutrality.

NBC has not replied to the letter.

But a few days after receiving it, they asked Amy Siskind, co-founder of The New Agenda, to appear on David Gregory’s “Race for the White House” program on MSNBC. The discussion was to be about NOW’s endorsement of an all-male ticket. According to the member newsletter:

“Amy said no. Not without the requested meeting with NBC’s Zucker and the public apology from Matthews for on-air sexism. Amy also let Gregory’s representative know that, until such time as Mr. Zucker and Mr. Matthews follow through on our requests, we would certainly be hypocritical to appear on any MSNBC show.

“Until we get that meeting and big public apology from Chris Matthews, it’s no way, no how to MSNBC. That should go for all of us and anyone we think values the fair treatment of women by the media. Spread the word.”

The New Agenda invites you to sign up and be a member, whether you’re male or female, Democrat or Republican, Libertarian or Green. It is heartening to see a non-partisan effort being made on the media issues.

I am so happy to see such a group. I hope there are many such movements and that they become strong and long-lasting (at least until there are real changes). Thanks for the information!

Has anyone seen this latest sexist outrage? (And note who the model was–creepy)

Just sent a reply email to the reporter Fitzsimmons at the Chicago Tribune voicing my disgust with this cretin bar owner. They have a poll…now going 69% to 39% for offensive.

There’s nothing wrong with nudity but this was obviously meant to demean and mock. Isn’t this the low culture we’re trying to get rid of? I’ve had enough of the crass, crude, ugly portrayal of sex, women as well as humanity itself.

Sorry, she’s not a recipient at Chicago paper. Will have to find out how to send letter to the editor.

Bruce Elliott is an incestuous pederast and this may be confirmed easily. How could this filthy-minded 68-year-old pervert ASK HIS OWN DAUGHTER TOPOSE NUDE and use her as his “Palin model”. Where was his ENABLER WIFE at the North Side Tavern.

Somebody should take a rusty kitchen knife and do some art work on Mr. Elliott’s anatomical aberrations to show him how beneficial to his understanding of misogyny would be to become a transgendered artist!

Then someone should go over the Bruce Elliott’s North Side Tavern and throw some black ink first on Bruce’s pedophilic face and then on his ignominious painting!

Then the old horny goat should jump over the cliff and save his daughter from further pedophile abuse and his enabler wife the outrage….

What a jerk!

A Roaring Puma should tear this pervert apart….

How very sad!!! No wonder we women get pushed, bumped, shoved and disrespected by those who are in such a hurry to pass us without so much as an “excuse me”…..we’re just not within their line of sight, and we are dispensible, without having had any part of “their” existence. And I’m speaking of both genders.

“Off the record, every suspicion you have about MSM being in the tank for Obama is true. We have a team of 4 people going thru dumpsters in Alaska and 4 in arizona. Not a single one looking into Acorn, Ayers or Freddiemae. Editor refuses to publish anything that would jeopardize election for Obama, and betting you dollars to donuts same is true at NYT, others. People cheer when CNN or NBC run another Palin-mocking but raising any reasonable inquiry into Obama is derided or flat out ignored. The fix is in, and its working.”

Whenever I read things like this I always wonder how these men treat/talk to their wives. I told one guy when I heard him talking about Palin, “I’m not trying to be rude, but if you think you talking like that about a woman is impressing other women…even those on your side. You’re not only wrong, your dead wrong. They’re thinking that is exactly how you’d talk to them. It’s mentally abusive. Do you know any woman regardless of party that says I think I’ll find me a man that’s mentally or physically abusive?” He apologized. It’s a power trip, and any man that is willing to talk like that about a woman, any woman isn’t far from the physical abuse either. They don’t see women as an equal. Or even a human, just a piece of flesh for them to get their jollies.

This election was so incrediably bias, it makes one wonder what exactly is going on here. Why is the media pushing so hard for Obama. Why? It can not be because all these “liberal” people want Obama to be in office. There has to be conservative reporters out there. There is something fishy going on. It is more likely that our government is now totally and utterly corrupted and there is nothing good politicans can do to win anymore. Whom ever has the most money wins. Its likely that this simple reason outshines them all, imho.

I would like The New Agenda to address:

1. ageism against older women by the MSM,
2. child rearing by a woman of any age and the ability to hold employment outside of the home at the same time,
3. subjecting a woman political candidate to any level of questioning with a biased focus regarding her capabilities as opposed to the male candidate.(i.e.: Obama questions v. Palin questions by Couric.)

You’re so right! We seem to have forgotten the deleterious effects of the media and Obama Campaign’s AGEIST PROPAGANDA ATTACKS combined with misogynist attacks against Sen. Hillary Clinton—and now Sen. John McCain! These issues are often inextricably connected to ugly sexist attacks on female candidates. And who can forget this favorite (aging) male right-winger’s statement:

“Who wants to watch a Woman President age before our very eyes!..” — Well, we watched RONNIE REAGAN and no one in either left or right peanut galleries seemed to mind! But, hey, have the estrogen take over and the testes are really tested!

Bright Greetings Dear American:

I need to ask you to support an urgent and important business relationship with a transfer of funds of great magnitude.

I am Ministry of Treasury of the Republic of America. My country has had a crisis that has caused the need for a large transfer of funds of $700 billion dollars US. If you would assist me in this transfer, it would be most profitable to you.

I am working with renowned Mr. Phil Gram, lobbyist for UBS, who will be my replacement as Ministry of Treasury in January. As a Senator of my blelegeaured and beautiful country, you may know him as the dear leader of the American banking deregulation movement of 1990s. This transactin is 100% safe.

This is a matter of great urgency. All you must does is send a blank check. We will be receiving the funds as quickly as possible. We cannot directly transfer these funds in the names of our close friends because we are constantly under surveillance. My family lawyer advised me that I should look for reliable and trustworthy person who will act as a next of kin so the funds can be transferred.

Please reply with all of your bank account, IRA and college fund account numbers and those of your children and grandchildren to wallstreetbailout@treasury.gov so that we transfer your commission for this transaction. After I receive you’re information, I will respond with detailed information about safeguards that will be used to protect the funds.

I’m a little sick of the idea of using children to promote political positions and especially candidates, so I’m inclined to look at this kind of effort with a jaundiced eye under any circumstances. However, this video seems even creepier than most. Sing for Change brags about getting 22 children from 5-12 to regurgitate some execrable lyrics as though they had the first clue about the topic of the songs:

I just wrote an analysis of this here:

http://hillaryorbust.com/2008/09/obama-grassroots-sing-for-change-symptom-of-new-age-madness/

I live in LA and used to live where this was filmed. I know these people. These are new agers gone loopy, and there’s a reason why they back Obama. Here is a snippet from my blog:

Let me make it clear: I am not against the new age in general. There is, however, a subset of new agers who are extremely emotionally fragile, who are unable to deal with criticism, conflict, or debate, and who shun anything that smacks of “negativity.” They are so emotionally bruised that they surround themselves with the concepts of “light and love” as a protection against the outer world. They refuse to hear anything negative. They live in constant denial, and if you try to tell them anything that smacks of reality, they will shut you down and stop listening.

Someone posted this link yesterday. I couldn’t get through the whole thing. I don’t know what these parents are thinking. The lyrics…There will be some saying aww cute, but they’re are many others that are going to ridicule them. Including their friends at school. Children can be cruel when they want to be. It’s sad that parents are subjecting their own children to the possiblilty of that ridicule.

It was blatant sexism against Hillary Clinton by Matthews, Olbermann & others in the MSM that drew me to PUMA. Prior to HRC, God help me, I supported “The Chosen One.” When BO’s shady past started catching up with him along with “NO! NO! NO! GOD DAMN AMERICA!” Rev Wright and all the rest, I dropped BO like a hot potato. I couldn’t believe how unvetted a candidate BO was anymore than I could believe how cheated and short sheeted HRC was by the same DNC who didn’t vet BO.

I continue to be astounded over the depths to which the MSM will stoop in portraying outstanding leaders like HRC and Sarah Palin as somehow inferior to even their least competent male counterpart. MSM no longer stands for mainstream media. These days it stands for misogynist/sexist/misogynist. There’s so little that is “mainstream” about reporting and reporters this election cycle, I’m beginning to think this country would be better off without MSM.

Both the DNC and the MSM are fatally flawed. It’s high time there’s a group like New Agenda to address sexism against women which seems to be in epidemic proportion these days. Too bad there isn’t a similar organization whose agenda it is to address political parties that overnight become corrupt liars and thieves.

Comment by Ken | 2008-10-01 15:17:47

I never cease to be amazed at how myopic you PUMAs are with all this hooey about sexism in the campaign.. where were all of you egalitarians when Hillary was pandering to the hard working white people of the country.
And with respect to her qualifications(notwithstanding the fact that she has performed capably once elected) she would not have had a snowball’s chance in hell of getting elected in NY had her husband not been the former president.

Do they even realize that McCain showed his birth certificate to reporters? Do they not realize Biden has had 2 aneurysms and stated he thought about suicide? Do they even fact check themselves before there surrogates open there mouth. Bad move dems bad move.

It is most possible this is to create a diversion from an Obama problem. They always go on the offensive when they are the ones guilty. Obama has only issued a summary of his medical records. Why not a more complete record? Is he hiding anything? If there is any truth to the promiscuity allegations he could be hiding his HIV status for all we know. And a lawyer can answer this better than I, but it is possible he could hide it by only releasing a summary. Do we have a right to know his HIV status? I’ll leave that question open as all this bullshit is making me dizzy.

The misogyny was what made me a PUMA. too.

I’m a refugee from Democratic Underground, where I fit in very well, politically speaking. When I take political orientation quizzes, I always wind up right next to Dennis Kucinich, which is fine by me.

I never endorsed Hillary as a candidate, but I have always loved and admired her. At DU, I soon found myself defending Hillary against the most horrible attacks.

Demographically, I’m a highly-educated white heterosexual male of a far left leaning—a likely candidate for absorption into the Obama Borg Commune.

But I don’t fancy misogyny. And I don’t fancy cheating. So here I am, dancing with the PUMAs, and doing silly anti-Obama videos like this one:

I think it will be really funny if those Obama supporters and Obama himself get served on the KKK law for their abuse of power in MO. Karma baby Karma…

You are so funny! I think I will dress up as Buffy the Bot Slayer… I will carry the antidote to kool aid… it will be called “common sense” water.

re: the koolaid kids. I stopped listening to the “progressive” radio station in Monterey not only because of their constant misogyny and attacks on Hillary but because they started running a commercial of a little kid with a guitar plunking in the background “Barack Obama for America” followed by the usual tripe. It’s very, very disturbing.

Obama states that the day he takes office he will review the 700 billion plan while talking in Reno. So is this urgent or not? Because they get sworn in (the pres and vp) during January, I am not understanding how if this needs to be done now, why is he talking about reviewing it later? Or is he stating just sign it now and if I get into the White House I will look it over 4 months later to see how it affects you?

Does he not know what is in the proposal now? I am ready to vote right now.

Comment by AnnieCarmel | 2008-09-30 16:05:40

Yes, he promised to go through line by line and throw out what he doesn’t want…some allusion to the housing part…as in he’ll take care of bringing ACORN back from the Oval Office.

The same could be true of JM in taking it back out if they ram this through but better to never let it get that far.

However, if it means it’s too complicated for the public to see this, then do whatever you have to to get into office and indeed, take care of it later. I’m frustrated enough by now to make it a means to the end.

He will look into the 700 billion and give it to his buddies that go him the job. Just like he will fix the FISA bill when he gets into the WH.

Why does he not tell us the truth? We do not have 700 billion to hand out to anyone, we have to borrow it!!

Did anyone but me see a weird resemblance to the ugly “art” of the Third Reich in that “painting”? This would probably be their depiction and objectification of a non-Aryan woman. Crude, clumsy and inspiring only of disgust.

Does anyone knows how to get emails for CNN? Jack Cafferty needs to go. His remarks on Gov Palin is just pathetic.

Comment by Leisa | 2008-09-30 16:13:03

Jack Cafferty looks like he lives in a crypt! He is one vile, sexist dirt bag.

Does anyone here have:

1) The youtube video of Obama flipping Hillary the finger? Or any version of it?

2) The youtube of Obama at his Iowa party playing “99 Problems and the Bitch Ain’t One.”

Thanks

Democrat Leaders Played to Lose
By The Prowler
Published 9/30/2008 12:50:21 AM

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ordered her Majority Whip, Jim Clyburn, to essentially not do his job in the runup to the vote on Monday for the negotiated Wall Street bailout plan, according to House Democrat leadership aides.

“Clyburn was not whipping the votes you would have expected him to, in part because he was uncomfortable doing it, in part because we didn’t want the push for votes to be successful,” says one leadership aide. “All we needed was enough to potentially get us over the finish line, but we wanted the Republicans to be the ones to do it. This was not going to be a Democrat-passed bill if the Speaker had anything to say about it.”

During the floor vote, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and House Democrat Conference chair Rahm Emanuel could be seen monitoring the vote on the floor, and gauging whether or not more Democrat votes were needed. Clyburn had expressed concerns, says the leadership aide, of being asked to press members of the Black and Hispanic caucuses on a bill he was certain those constituencies would not want passed.

“It worked out, because we didn’t have a dog in this fight. We negotiated. We gave the White House a bill. It was up to the Republicans to get the 100 plus votes they needed and they couldn’t do it,” said another Democrat leadership aide.

Emanuel, who served as a board member for Freddie Mac, one of the agencies that precipitated the economic crisis the nation now finds itself in, had no misgivings about taking a leadership role in tanking the bill. “He was cheerleading us along, mothering the votes,” says the aide. “We wanted enough to put the pressure on the Republicans and Congressman Emanuel was charged with making it close enough. He did a great job.”

Pelosi and her aides have made it clear they were not going to “whip” or twist the arms of members who did not want to vote, but they also made no effort to rally any support for a bill they attempted to hijack over the weekend.

Further, according to House Oversight Committee staff, Emanuel has received assurances from Pelosi that she will not allow what he termed a “witch hunt” to take place during the next Congressional session over the role Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac played in the economic crisis.

Emanuel apparently is concerned the roles former Clinton Administration members may have played in the mortgage industry collapse could be politically — or worse, if the Department of Justice had its way, legally — treacherous for many.

They are still trying to blame the Clintons, and they call themselves Democrats. That was eight years ago. These Dem legislators controlled the Congress for the last two years, and couldn’t do anything right. What have they got to say for themselves?

That damn sexist media won’t let Palin sit for interviews or press conferences. Oh and they make McCain sit in on a Katie Curic followup interview and answer questions for her and interrupt her a bunch of times. Damn sexist media.

Comment by olivia | 2008-10-01 12:24:48

It’s disgusting what the media does to women, but unfortunately the McCain campaign uses this as a shield to prevent some people from seeing the disastrous choice he made for his party, and potentially for our country.

The debate is set up as a battle of the sexes, Biden forewarned to treat her a certain way. Now considering how McCain treated Obama at the last debate I assume someone running for either for these offices should be able to endure a modicum of disrespectful treatment without crying.

The notion that women merit the same access and treatment as men is difficult to take seriously when society is left to figure out when it applies and when it doesn’t.
