Education Does Not Make a Leader

A recent e-mail making the rounds suggests that Barack Obama’s superior education and intelligence mandates his choice as president over John McCain.
There are many things wrongs with using a single category as a decisional tool for a job so complicated as the presidency. Surely one’s experience, character, judgment displayed in the past, leadership qualities, legislative accomplishment, patriotism, etc., should be considered.
Paper accomplishment has its limits. After all, Ted Kaczynski attended Harvard and earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Michigan – but he was a destructive individual. Bill Gates, famous as an innovator and now a humanitarian, was in college only briefly. And many of us have had college professors who we would not entrust with picking up our newspaper from the driveway while we were away on vacation.
But let’s look anyway at the single variable of educational pedigree as a predictor of presidential performance. (Aside: McCain’s defenders may point out that McCain’s father and grandfather made four star admiral, though they were very poor Naval Academy students.)
Who were the great presidents and who were the failures? Numerous polls of historians show a fair consensus, with some large deviations for recent presidents, as might be expected. I chose the most recent polls listed at Wikipedia’s Historical Rankings of U.S. Presidents, which have the advantage of the most coverage, but I looked at other listed polls when recent polls showed wide variation. I am not making a statistical comparison; changing standards of education over time make that a questionable task (as education has become more formalized over time). And to keep this at readable length, I have omitted many qualifications on my analysis. So here goes –
Among the top ten presidents, Lincoln’s formal education consisted of about 18 months of schooling; he was largely self-educated. Washington may have attended a school near his home for the first few years. He was not taught Latin or Greek, as was common among the “educated” of the time, and never learned a foreign language. Nor did he attend college (Harvard, WM. & Mary, Yale and Princeton were available). His formal education ended around the age of 15.
Getting to the modern era, where paper degrees supposedly are a surrogate for intelligence, Truman (whose standing has risen to #7 in the polls) did not earn a college degree. Reagan (whose ranking, controversially, varies from 6 to 16) graduated from an institution of little note — Eureka College.
Eisenhower, now consistently ranked in the top ten, finished in the upper half of his class at the Military Academy, but was routinely criticized during the 1950’s as being not intellectual or well read.
On the other hand, the two Roosevelts, members of the highest echelons of America’s upper class, were very well educated. Wilson was perhaps the best educated president, and often ranks in the top ten, but his star is diminishing as historians place his imperialist foreign policy, his racism (he reinstituted segregation into the federal government) and sexism (he tried to have a leading suffragette committed to an insane asylum, and countenanced the brutal beating and prison torture of suffragette demonstrators), and his odious personal beliefs (e.g., he was a eugenicist) into modern perspective. Grover Cleveland, whose rankings vary from 8th to 20th, did not attend college.
Middling presidents (those ranking in the 20’s) include Hayes, who was first in his class at Kenyon College and who completed Harvard Law in two years. He is right now our only Harvard Law School graduate.
Bill Clinton (underrated in the polls, IMHO) went to Georgetown’s elite Foreign Service School, where he was Phi Beta Kappa. He studied at Oxford under a Rhodes Scholarship, and graduated from Yale Law School.
Taft (20th) graduated second from his Yale class, then got a law degree from Cincinnati. John Q. Adams (25th) went to Harvard. So, the middle of the pack has a number of well educated persons. (The famously well-read and educated John Kennedy with time has seen his rankings drop, to between 14 and 18.)
Now the fun part — the bottom of the rankings, and bowing to current popular opinion, let us start off by noting that though a mediocre student, George W. Bush attended Phillips Academy, Yale University, and has an MBA from Harvard. A perennial in the loser category, James Buchanan (ranked 40th), graduated from Dickinson College with honors, then studied law. Franklin Pierce (38th) finished third in his class at Bowdoin, then attended an unnamed law school.
Andrew Johnson (37th) was self-taught, a point for the degree=excellence school, but John Tyler (35th) graduated from the prestigious Wm. & Mary, then read for the law.
Jimmy Carter (34th) attended Georgia Tech before receiving an appointment to the United States Naval Academy where he received a physics degree in 1946. Carter finished a high 59th out of his Academy class of 820. Richard Nixon (32nd) was a Duke Law School graduate.
Hoover (31st) had a geology degree from Stanford, later becoming a mining engineer. Gerald Ford (28th) had a University of Michigan degree in political science and economics; at Yale Law he graduated in the top 25 percent of his class.
Again, this is a simplified analysis, but the proposition that academic achievement equates with expected presidential performance is so demonstrably false that a more rigorous analysis is unnecessary.

George W. Bush has degrees from Harvard and Yale. Worst president ever.

It is hard to flunk out of an elite school. I went to one — well, top 25 anyway — and it was almost impossible to fail a course. That doesn’t happen at some state schools of which I’m aware.

She said this morning that Palin made people feel that she was one of them. Well, hello…most of us have our children in public school, most of us didn’t go to IVY league universities and most Americans don’t have six figure salaries. Biden speaks of being patriotic and paying more taxes but yet Palin gave more to charity in one year than he did in close to ten years (lead by example I say). Yup, she is more like us than the lawyers.

Now gosh darnit, Everyone of us lucky enough to have retirement funds see the value dropping before our eyes, yet they are trying to make them out to be the next Rockfellers of Alaska! Sarah knows from experience that the difference for most American families between falling thru the cracks and thriving is a decent job with benefits and energy independence is the way to get us there. It is very childish. There are about a million lawyers in this country and many of them are good citizens and have big influence in their communities. It will be foolish to attack them.
Remember that old joke about the guy who hires the kid who just graduated from college and starts him out sweeping floors? The kid protests, “but I have a college degree!” So the employer says, “oh great, now I guess I have to teach you how to use a broom.”
It’s true, there really is no education that can replace common sense or teach you practical skills. Education is only a tool, some people can have a whole shed full of tools, but that doesn’t mean they know how to use any of them.
Yes, Obama had his fancy education and law degree, got hired by Ayers shortly thereafter, then spent around $160 million on failed projects. Great resume and use of that education.
I think Obama’s degrees came off the internet. Every day when I get to work I have tons of emails where I can order the degree of my choice for $9.95.
Another little connection that needs to be expanded:
The Ayers’ lawyers were/are Sidley Austin in Chicago, the firm that gave BO a summer job while still in law school, the managing partner of which at that time was Saul Minow, one of whose children was teaching antiracism etc. at HLS at that time. It could be that BO got into HLS and then into law followed by politics by just getting wrapped up in a well-funded little caccoon set up by Ayers and their connections. Don’t forget, that was also the firm that had Ayers wife working there even though with her record she could not be admitted formally to the bar. A very tight set of connections.
I think its deeper and creepier than we can imagine. Bet it was the Ayers husband and wife links to the Black Panthers when they were in New York bilking rich white folks for swank baby clothes and then passing the money on to the Black Panthers for bombs. Who solicited funds for Obama’s education?

You are spot on. We have an acquaintance (couple) who are both doctors and when their children came of working age (16) they sent them over to us. The first one started at the bottom and worked hard, we have a photo of him where he messed up and got all dirty (head to toe). Over the next two years the last one came through and he too wanted to do a good job over the summer and learned many skills (people skills) and they both earned a little over minimum wage and both thank us for the experience. Both young men loved coming to work and spending time with all the workers and were ever so respectful.
Now here is the kicker…these two attended prep schools in the East Coast that have a sticker price (shocking…) of IVY league tuition and yes the first one is now at Harvard and the other one is over seas.
My point is, that folks that have come from humble beginnings always want their children to learn A HARD DAYS WORK so that they can know and count their blessings.
Anybody else wonder about the timing of this financial crisis?

Oblahblah was basically “city shopping” while he was in school. First he goes to Los Angeles, transfers to New York. Then off to Boston. But he- the aspiring pol- chooses CHICAGO to settle down in? In the corrupt dirty Chicago machine he finds a community? That speaks volumes to me.
Yeah, Chicago snapped him right up. Exactly what this country does NOT need: a Chicago lawyer with a crap resume who’s in bed with thugs.
Perhaps one should analyze how one parlayed their degree after graduation. Obama with a Harvard Law degree never won a landmark case, and he never became a partner in a law firm. He also never spearheaded a philanthropic legal organization for the indigent and the poor. Because his performance as attorney has been lackluster at best, I regard him as an underachiever who is arrogant and complacent.
I actually have a better record as a lawyer than Obama. Before I retired, I won some big cases, and one of my cases was upheld by the Supreme Court.
I’m not sure Obama really practiced law.
In Barry’s case the degrees probably did help him to inject himself into dirty Chicago politics, but in spite of the elite education he has done an abysmal job for the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois. I have only heard of his voting record, which is important, but no one is doing in-depth reporting of how Chicago is doing these days, esp the South Side.
Compare his record to Governor Palin’s re accomplishments and community.

I don’t even understand how this is an issue any longer. This week I attended two functions for McCain and Palin. The difference between the two sides is remarkable. The McCains and Palins embody what AMERICA is. Service to your country, love of America, fighting for the PEOPLE, etc. It couldn’t be more clear who the real LEADERS are. I haven’t watched Ohblowme speak in months. When he opens his mouth, he lies. It’s that simple. There is nothing about Ohblowme, IMO, that is American. 1. Did Khalid al-Mansour pay off officials at Harvard to push, the POS Obama, through its system of sewers? The sum would have to have been huge considering the size of this turd.

State and federal government MUST have his college records but maybe they can’t release them. At least I hope they have them. Please don’t tell me that there is more vetting done on school teachers than there is to a potential potus.
The bottom line when you hire someone is you hope they have a education relevant to issues on the job and most of all can adapt and have the courage to assess, take and manage risk.
Sara Palin got the job as governor and saw corruption and did something about it and moved on to optimize her states revenue.
Barack Obqama took the job as subcommittee chair on European Affairs (very relevant to a president) and did not hold a meeting.
When you hire a person, you look for a person who did something with their education.

Do you realize that when Sarah was on that oil Board where she discovered the corruption, reported it, and no one would do anything about it, she resigned from that Board. The position paid $130,000 a year.

George Bush got into Yale and Harvard because he is a rich white boy. He got a C average while attending. Freedom Fighter, you must not be aware of the “extra help” that minorities typically receive in college. Historically white colleges and universities are desperate for minority students. If they have to give them a little push to make it, they are happy to do it. I have seen it, so I know it is true.
