Reprise: Ohio: Vote Early, Vote Often

Truthteller here: Although I disagree with Ohio’s new voter registration arrangement, I intend to register and vote today at one of the early voting locations in the state. Please contact voters in Ohio who oppose Obama, and ask them to register and vote today if they are not already registered. Today is the last day one can register to vote in the November election in Ohio.

“Vote Early and Often” takes on new meaning in the twisted and abused registration and voting process now wrapping up today in Ohio. It is not as if Ohio, like Florida, has not seen its share of voting challenges in past elections, but it appears that they are out to outdo their past reputation to create a voting result that is not legit or reflective of the state’s residents.

  • A person can register to vote through October 6th, even without identification. You simply need to state that you are a citizen of the United States, will be 18 on or before the election date, a resident of Ohio for at least 30 days by election date, are not incarcerated for a felony, not declared incompetent for voting purposes, or have not been permanently disenfranchised for violations of the election laws. Although a valid Ohio driver’s license is requested for identification, one is not required. If not available, the last four digits of your Social Security number are requested, but not required. Thereafter, nothing is required but your signature (Voter Registration Instructions, Ohio Revised Code Section 3503.28 and Voter Registration Form).

  • Once you’ve registered, “Any qualified Ohio voter may request and vote an absentee ballot without stating a reason.” Thus, while still at the board of elections office, as an absentee voter (no reason required) you then “request, receive and vote your ballot” (Ohio Elections & Ballot Issues: Absentee Voting)
  • “Voters who do not have….identification, will still be able to vote by signing an affirmation swearing to the voter’s identity under penalty of election falsification and by casting a provisional ballot.” (Voter Registration Instructions, Ohio Revised Code Section 3503.28).

On August 13, Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner (D) set this up by issuing “a directive advising county elections boards that they must have procedures in place to allow voters who register to be immediately issued an absentee ballot.” (Associated Press, New Ohio Voter Registration Rules Irk GOP). Apparently only college towns were initially implementing this directive. And the AP reported that the Obama campaign was eagerly taking advantage of this. Obama spokesman Isaac Baker is quoted saying “This is one of many ways we’ll be encouraging our supporters to skip the lines on Election Day and make sure their vote is cast early.” Republicans question the loophole and its inconsistent implementation–not offering the same voting opportunity to rural and working-class voters. The loophole: Normally voter registration applications are subject to review before a voter registration card is issued (disputed Ohio law says a person must be registered 30 days prior to requesting an absentee ballot). As the AP notes, this lack of security and review raises fears of “massive voting fraud.”

As if voter fraud wasn’t a concern, Secretary of State Brunner has decided that counties may use their discretion about whether to allow poll watchers or not during registration and early voting. As the Wall Street Journal reports, poll watchers have been turned away in at least one location. But poll watchers are of limited value since even if allowed to observe, they are “no longer allowed to challenge voters at polling places, but may gather information to challenge them later.” With electronic voting, that makes challenges meaningless.

After October 6 and through election day previously registered voters will be able to visit their local board of elections offices to vote. Again, without identification and without oversight of poll watchers.

Further undermining Ohio voting integrity, state law requires that election officials send out notices to registered voters 60 days before an election. NPR reports that as many as 600,000 were “returned as undeliverable”–e.g., the address was invalid or the named person did not reside at that address. While normally this would cause or permit challenge of the voter registration, Secretary of State Brunner decided this year that it would not. Thus, over half a million potentially fraudulent votes might be cast this year!

NPR also reports that as of September 30th, at least five lawsuits had been filed regarding Ohio’s voting process for this election. Lawsuits challenging same day registration and voting have now been thrown out. Likewise, the Wall Street Journal reports that lawsuits challenging poll watcher access have also been thrown out. Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, who previously pledged “complete transparency in the election process” is now fighting what she says are “expensive and time-consuming” lawsuits because of the lack of transparency she has created.

The Result?

The Obama campaign and supporters are dredging homeless shelters, halfway houses, soup kitchens, bars, and alleys for potential voters. Others, like Rock-the-Vote, are hitting up high schools. Numerous reports explain how these new voters are driven to the polls, coached on how to register and vote, then driven to locations of their choosing. Without registration integrity, nor requirement to even have identification, there is no way to know if the person is legally eligible to vote, nor if they have already voted. The likely result:

  • Under age voting
  • Non-resident voting
  • Felons voting
  • Repeat voting

Yes, in Ohio this year you can vote early and often.

Please don’t get me wrong. I firmly believe that every effort should be made to encourage and get eligible voters to become informed and cast their vote. But to set up a registration and voting process that does not provide security against fraudulent voting risks the integrity of the election process and the results. And then, to deny observers access to monitor the election removes the any legitimacy to the process.

I personally worked as an election precinct worker and precinct chief on behalf of the Democratic Party in Virginia for many years. We were trained by the office of elections, had rules in place to follow, had observers to monitor the process. I was very comfortable that I was part of a legitimate and professional effort that resulted in open and fair elections. I am appalled by what is occurring at the state’s direction in Ohio.

Is the integrity of the Ohio vote being undermined?

The short answer is Yes. There are too many news and blog reports to list that tell and show problems with the voting. Will it throw the election? I don’t know. Will anyone be able to say so definitively? Probably not. But what will be indisputable is that the election results will be suspect.

I am concerned about the way BO has been able to game the voting system, and the donations(campaign finances) system…I think the reason the DNC moved to Chicago, was so that they could do things in a “new “way…cheat.

We will learn next year about the huge problem of fraud we are watching with our own eyes…

no time to stop it now…?

Prediction:

Election night, we’ll keep hearing how close it is in Ohio … “too close to call” … just like Indiana in the Dem Primaries where Hillary pulled out a very narrow win.

Remember at 11pm that night CNN was still saying too close to call and all the problems were focused in Gary IN and cities nearby. Remember the Mayor of Gary - a big Obama supporter who promised to deliver Gary for Obama - saying they were still counting absentee ballots … but various employees were calling in to CNN disputing what the Mayor said.

Well, my prediction is that certain counties/cities in OH will hold back their vote counts until late night … and all of a sudden Obama will win.

Then what will happen?

Outcry over voting irregularities.

But how can you track homeless and how can you track multiple-voting by the same person? Without a permanent address to verify residency and without a valid ID, OH will be another “black box” voting fiasco. This time it won’t be so much the issue of faulty electronic voting machines … it be loopholes in voting laws and untrackable/non-verifiable voters.

If you want to see how Obama will “take” this election just go back and look at the Dem Primaries and Caucuses. Go to http://www.caucusfraud.org and http://www.wewillnotbesilenced2008.com

Obama won’t just steal Ohio … he will take other battleground states in this same fashion: by taking advantage of loopholes in voter laws. He operates in stealth mode and by the time everyone catches on … it’ll be too late.

ACORN is picking up the homeless, feeding them, taking them to a polling location, helping them fill out their absentee ballot and then proceed to the next polling location - with the same bus load of people.

They are also doing the same thing with college students ( that don’t meet the six month residency requirement).

I’m a poll watcher. Jennifer Brunner won’t allow us near the polling locations during this registration period. There is no way of verifing that any of these registrations are valid.

It is so despicable it is beyond words! Aren’t the Repubs doing anything? Can they even do anything? Ohio is such an important battle ground state.

I know there are more patriotic law-abiding citizens in Ohio than frauds who would steal their votes. There needs to be a public awareness campaign to get them out to vote on November 4th and dilute the fraud. Don’t let your vote be stolen!

I am terribly troubled about what is going on in this country. On the way to take my child to school this am, every radio station I turned to has somebody saying it’s over for McCain, that he has run out of steam and ideas.

Barack Hussein Obama is a threat to our way of life and the very freedoms that our soldiers have died for over the years, yet he is on the verge of stealing, lying and cheating his way into the Oval Office.

I am telling everyone I know to take a hard look at this shell of a man, his background and his heinous associations before they vote away their precious freedom.

McCain/Palin Nov. 4th

Comment by tek | 2008-10-06 08:46:51

I heard the most depressing report on NPR this morning. They are saying that Obama is ahead because of the way he “responded” to the economic crisis! What response? He stayed out on the campaign trail. The reporter said McCain could have benefited from the crisis if he had embraced it but he “seemed confused” and offered no ideas! What? McCain suspended his campaign and returned to Washington to help make a plan while Obama kept cramming for the debate. Even NPR and PBS are now shilling for the corporations.

For the last three presidential elections this has happened. The corporations pick their candidate and then they give the media their marching orders and the n we get an ineffective crook in the WH helping to rip off the taxpayers of this country. I don’t even know what we can do about it. It seems like every election, the corps pick out some particular group in the population and get a candidate who will pander to that group and it divides people and distracts them from seeing the whole picture and the truth about the loss of our democracy. This year it’s AAs, Mexicans, and the loony left.

Don’t count him out yet. McCain will make a major comeback and will win this election. Actually just let the so called Democratic party to be over confident. That will be their downfall once again.

OFF TOPIC BUT URGENT!!!

My email address is being used by obamabots to write to my Senator. This morning I got a response from my Senators office saying they got an email from ME and I didn’t send him any mail for months.

This is horrible. I sent my Senator a reply asking what I supposedly said.

Something happened two weeks ago that made me believe my email was being used but I ignored it.

If these thugs are using my name they are using yours too.

NOT IN MY NAME I OWN MY VOTE!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ll let you all know what my Senator’s office has to say when I hear back from them. That obots are emailing using my email address is freaking SICK.
Republicans should just beat barky at his own game and expose the voter fraud.
Get 500 people together.
Buss them from polling station to polling station today.
Provide no proof of id ss number anything demand to get to vote early and do it over and over at every polling station while recording it on camera.
Then let fox news run with it.
I hope this fraudlent attack on our Democratic foundation motivates the patriotic and law-abiding citizens of Ohio to vote in full force and say in one loud voice ” No you don’t”. No you don’t steal my vote. No I will not allow your fraud to cancel my vote.
I am not saying Republicans should cheat. What I am saying is the patriotic law abiding citizens of Ohio- regardless of party preference- should stand firm against fraud tactics which undermine their rights. Come out in full force and dilute the fraud.
Comment by Liz B | 2008-10-06 13:20:45
I say cheating witha purpose is necessary today. I agree with Jeremiah, we need a counterattack. Surely there are enough willing Repubs to fill up a bus and drive it around gaming the system. Film it! And BTW, why doesn’t FOX have a camera crew filming the homeless in buses? They should be following them from poll to poll and reporting on it. Shit will hit the fan, and hopefully we can get the absentee, and early votes thrown out or at the very least held for review and verification.
I just watched Sarah Palin’s entire Clearwater speech on Fox. She was spectacular. This is a gifted campaigner. The crowd was huge and incredibly excited. Living in Ohio, I hope she comes near me because I would love to see her in person.
Yes, she did not shy away from mentioning Ayers at length. She uses patriotism throughout her speech and the Ayers connection puts the exclamation point on the feelings of love of country immensely that she evokes in her speech.
I hope McCain takes this issue on in the Tuesday debate. He, as a former POW, can have righteous indignation and disgust with a person like Bill Ayers. McCain would not want to be in the same room with someone like that. I think this is a point only he can make and I hope he makes it. His convention speech was most effective when he talked about his love of country and his POW experience. Most people (except the DK crowd) do love their country and would not want to be associated with someone they KNOW hates this country.
McCain and Palin will be in Ohio at 2 separate rallies on Oct 8th.
How many people were at the FL rally?
What do we have on the Keating 5 that shows all of the story?…. because this is what Obama is using against McCain. I don’t think the 5 thing has anything to do with Palling around with terrorist, I mean it is not like Keating blew up anyone like Ayers did but it should be covered here to point out that McCain was not found guilty of anything except bad judgment.
Fight back with the truth.
unlike Ayers, the Keating 5 issue dircetly effects the economy. i think Americans would care more about Mccain being involved in Wall Street Board than Obama sitting on a board with some washed-up 60’s radical.
Thought of an idea that might work. Go out & buy those small (8 x 11) U.S. flags and take them to each house with a Mccain/Palin yard sign. Put them next to the sign on all main streets. The visual to all passing motorists might get them to think about Patriotism and their vote.
Someone has been ripping my McCain sign up every night this week, I am considering what to do about it. I might sit in my car and wait for the Bot with a camera, may coat the sign with oil, and I’m thinking of borrowing dog poo from the neighbor, or maybe big nails stuck up in a row…maybe all of the above. To really f*** with them, I may be putting about 25 signs up all in a row…it gives me more time to catch them on film.
There’s a couple residents in my area who have the little flags next to their signs. It is an effective statement.
I love this idea. Everytime you see a McCain sign you should see an American Flag. I watched Palin’s speech in Clearwater this morning and they had a group sitting behind her dressed in red, white and blue shirts and sitting in a configuration that formed an American Flag behind her. It was very effective I thought.
For every “Joe-Blow” off the street to walk in and vote makes me angry, for we have to dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s!
There is no logic to this plan, and I can’t understand this judge’s ruling!
Why not just close the check-points on the Mexican and Canadian borders and have a “come one come all” election?
Comment by Sassy | 2008-10-06 10:22:17
Did Governor Strickland comment on this procedure at all?
Secondly, out of curiosity, do the Amish vote in Ohio and Pennsylvania?
I have never heard this addressed.
