Monica Conyers, Detroit City Council president pro tem and wife of Rep. John Conyers - was instrumental in running Sen. Obama’s GOTV stealth program for “undecided” in the Michigan primary. Somehow classy doesn’t come to mind when I think of her. Recently, she had a debate with middle schoolers and it looks to me that she may have been schooled herself.

The young ladies show quite a bit more class and maturity than Councilwoman Conyers.

And in regards to what Sen. Obama has referred to as a ‘grassroots campaign’ - here is the script that was broadcast on radio stations in Michigan, via the Washington Post..

And just to be clear here, the caps aren’t mine…

MALE: THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IS CONFUSING. I WANT TO VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA BUT OBAMA’S NAME IS NOT ON THE BALLOT.

FEMALE: THERE IS NO ONE ON THAT BALLOT I WANT TO BE PRESIDENT.

MALE: WELL, THESE FOLKS CAN HELP US. EXCUSE ME, CONGRESSMAN CONYERS AND COUNCILWOMAN CONYERS, WE NEED YOUR HELP.

FEMALE: HOW CAN WE VOTE FOR OBAMA ON TUESDAY?

Rep. Conyers: YOU CAN’T. YOU CANNOT EVEN WRITE IN OBAMA’S NAME. IF YOU DO YOUR VOTE WILL NOT COUNT BECAUSE OBAMA’S CAMPAIGN CHOSE NOT TO PLACE HIS NAME ON THE MICHIGAN BALLOT SO AS NOT TO VIOLATE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY RULES. BUT YOU CAN VOTE UNCOMMITTED

Councilwoman Conyers: IF AT LEAST 15% OF THE PEOPLE VOTE UNCOMMITTED, THE STATE DEMOCRATIC PARTY MUST SEND THAT PERCENTAGE OF DELEGATES TO THE NATIONAL CONVENTION UNCOMMITTED.

Rep. Conyers: MY WIFE AND I ARE VOTING UNCOMMITTED. WE WILL WORK WITH THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY TO MAKE SURE THAT UNCOMMITTED DELEGATES GO TO THAT CONVENTION TRULY UNCOMMITTED SO THAT OBAMA CAN COMPETE FOR THEIR VOTE.

MALE: THANK YOU CONGRESSMAN CONYERS AND COUNCILWOMAN CONYERS. I WILL JOIN YOU AND VOTE UNCOMMITTED ON TUESDAY.

FEMALE: ME TOO - AT LEAST MY VOTE WON’T BE WASTED

Councilwoman Conyers: THIS TRUTH IN POLITICS MESSAGE WAS PAID FOR BY FRIENDS OF MONICA CONYERS [end}]

Rep. John Conyers is uh, being less than truthful when he states that Sen. Obama removed his name from the ballot to comply with the DNC’s rules. There is a remarkable degree of irony in the script which rings true with me, as one who voted in Michigan. Particularly the part that says “at least my vote won’t be wasted.”

Although I don’t often agree with all that Nolan Finley says (the conservative editor of the Detroit News) - as far as denying voters, he gets it. From his blog at Detroit News.

DNC pays price for messing up Michigan

The Democratic National Committee will have only itself to blame if its presidential nominee wins with an asterisk.

Sen. Barack Obama, after winning big in North Carolina and battling to a virtual tie in Indiana Tuesday night, has all but secured the Democratic nomination.

But it might have been a different story if Michigan and Florida had been allowed to hold primaries that counted. Clinton was the favorite in both states, but never got a chance to put them in her column because the DNC insisted on punishing them for moving up their primaries.

With wins in Michigan and Florida, Clinton would likely be ahead in the popular vote, and perhaps in delegates. With the two states on the sidelines, Obama likely wins a contest that Clinton backers are already calling illegitmate.

DNC Chairman Howard Dean made a mess of Michigan and Florida by putting rules ahead of results.

If he couldn’t come up with a solution for getting fair and meaninful primaries in those two states, it’s hard to see how Dean can keep the increasing bitterness between the Clinton and Obama camps from hurting Democratic chances this fall. [end]

And if you have a minute or two, google Monica Conyers + gun or Monica Conyers + bar fight. She’s just a regular barrel of chuckles, isn’t she?
