Contributors wanted for upcoming anthology Forever Changed: Tales from the Campaign Trail, edited by Lynette Long and Joan Lipkin.

The 2008 presidential race and resulting election of Barack Obama galvanized a nation and changed the lives of those who were involved.  It is essential that our stories be told, especially since many of them were overlooked or misrepresented in the mainstream media.

Please consider submitting a piece about your experiences or perceptions.  The book will most likely be organized in a time sequenced fashion -starting with Hillary’s announcement of her candidacy to the coronation of Barack Obama. To avoid replication and to help create a viable framework for the book, we propose picking one or more of the suggested topics.  These suggestions are not meant to be literal titles or topics but rather used as a guide to help stimulate your creativity and thinking.  Several pieces may be published under each topic.  Some topics may be eliminated and additional topics may be added based on the response.  The idea of the book is to present an overview of Hillary’s candidacy through the hearts and minds of the people impacted by her campaign.

For essays, word count should be between 1000 and 4000 words. Shorter pieces, anecdotes and poems to bridge various sections will also be considered.

All contributors are required to include one paragraph which explains your involvement in this year’s historic campaign.  Maybe you were a blogger, a fundraiser, an armchair observer, or someone who volunteered at the polls. It will help readers put your piece in perspective and understand you better.  In addition, please submit a separate 100 word bio suitable for publication.

All submitted essays will be considered for publication but publication is not guaranteed.  Remuneration will be one copy of the book. After publication, copyrights will revert back to contributors. 

We’d like to get the book out as quickly as possible to capitalize on the energy related to this historic election. We are contacting publishers as we speak.  Therefore, deadline for submissions are Dec 20, 2008.  You may submit more than one essay although we are likely to only select one by each person to get the broadest view points.

In order to increase the credibility of the product, all articles must be written in the authors own name.  No blog names will be accepted.  All documents should be sent as word attachments with numbered papers, in Ariel font and 12 point type.

But I really thought (yes, I really did) — that day when Hillary and Barack were whispering to each other on that plane — that they’d come to an arrangement. That they had struck THIS deal: Hillary would dutifully campaign for Barack, frequently and with passion, and so would Bill. And, in exchange, she’d get to lead the Congressional effort for universal health care. And her name might even be attached to the health care plan.

(Of note: She had to campaign for Barack no matter what because, if he’d lost, she’d forever have been blamed. And even if he’d won, and she hadn’t performed, she’d have been treated as a turncoat outcast. It was a terrible situation for her to be in, and I ached for her.)

But now this?????? This twisting of the knife stabbed into Hillary and all of her supporters, most of whom came through for you (god knows why but they did), you selfish pr–k, Barack??? And For The Losers

Hillary Clinton didn’t get the VP slot. And she is not getting health care stewardship– at least not in the Senate. Politics is tough stuff. And if you lose, the winners generally ignore or spurn you, unless you have something to offer them or pose some danger to them. It might be wise for the new President to give Hillary, and Bill too, something to do. There will be rockier times ahead and it pays to keep your rivals close. Still, it is not likely she will pose much of a danger to his success. Her bargaining power is gone.

PARITY IN TURKEY

"Engin says the days of women having only five percent of the seats in parliament have to end.

"Once we are going to have more and more women in parliament, I believe the rights of the women have to be much more discussed in the parliament," siad Engin.

Kader, a non-partisan group, wants to put more women in parliament. Nuket Sirman is one of the founders of Kader. She says the members of the organization came up with what they think is a winning slogan to promote their cause.

"We took out mustaches and stuck them on our faces, and the slogan was, is a mustache necessary, in other words do you have to be a man to go into parliament," said Sirman.

Kader took the idea a step further. The group persuaded many of Turkey’s most powerful women, including pop stars and business leaders, to don mustaches, to highlight the male domination of parliament. The media ran with the story. Soon Turks were seeing famous women wearing mustaches on television and in newspapers and magazines. Sirman says the publicity campaign has struck a chord."

"With the elections on 22 July in Turkey, the percentage of women in parliament sprung from 4.2 % to 9.1%, from 24 women to 50. Of these 30 are from AKP, 10 from CHP, 2 from MHP and 8 are independents supported by the (pro-Kurdish) Democratic Turkey Party.

Two of these women are now deputy parliamentary speakers: Istanbul Deputy Meral Akşener (MHP) and İzmir deputy Güldal Mumcu (CHP). The only other time a woman served as deputy parliamentary speaker was 38 years ago. Being deputy parliamentary speaker involves chairing the sessions of the General Assembly that the speaker does not attend (and the speaker usually only attends the historically significant sessions) and serving as Acting President of the Republic when both the President of the Republic and the Speaker of Parliament are abroad.

Don’t think for a moment that just because the election is over, that President-elect Obama’s Kool-Aid drunk hordes of internet volunteer/bots/thugs are going to fade away and go back to playing Doom, Sims, Dungeons and Dragons or trolling for dates on Facebook.

In fact, one of the netroots’ great gurus, none other than Joe Trippi believes the Community Organizer in Chief will harness the power of his millions of devoted on-line minions to create one of the most powerful lobbying forces ever. Frank Greve of the McClatchy newspapers writes about that here.

Oppose the President at your own peril.

Joe Trippi, the Internet politics guru whose computer geeks made Howard Dean a contender in 2004 and who went on to design Obama’s socially networked campaign machine, offers a provocative and educated guess.

Trippi predicted that Obama would use his forces, first and foremost, to intimidate congressional foes of his agenda, rally his allies and forge “one of the most powerful presidencies in American history.”

Certainly, Obama reaches the White House with the biggest, best organized, fastest-acting grass-roots army in the history of presidential campaigning.

Moreover, because his Internet operation was miles ahead of Republican John McCain’s, Obama’s liberal-to-libertarian electronic activists are in a position to dominate the new political medium much as conservative Republicans dominate talk radio.

As for political utility, many thousands of volunteers such as Hood will be deployable within hours, with great precision and at almost no cost, thanks to the campaign’s state-of-the-art information-management systems.

The president-elect’s political operatives know, for example, the ZIP codes and hence the congressional districts of each of Obama’s million most active campaigners, those who volunteered via his Web site mybarackobama.com. It’s a social network that the campaign set up to communicate needs, events and assignments to volunteers.

We have already witnessed the power of his online intimidation network. Pro-Hillary websites shut down after thousands of false spam reports from Obots, personal e-mails of bloggers reported for spam and turned off as well and of course those lovely trolls who invade every site to hijack any discussion that deviates from the Obama party line.

Several media outlets were bombarded with harassing phone calls, e-mails and protestors minutes after the devoted received “Obama action alerts” letting them know that opposition voices were soon to appear on certain programs.

Those who read here are already well aware that the candidate who promised a new kind of politics also approves of a new kind of political dissent. That is of course, no dissent at all.

It really is scary to think of how he might use that power to pursue his agenda. All the more reason that we at No Quarter must begin to organize ourselves and grow our ranks. It will be the only way to combat the power of the mob.
