Clyburn, rather than getting the back of the president titled America’s first black president by none other than Toni Morrison, suggested he “chill out,” never ONCE acknowledging that what Bill Clinton said was TRUE!! And he just went down from there as the primary season continued, concluding with throwing his superdelegate support to Obama (now THERE was a surprise - it doesn’t take a genius to see that was where he was heading. His “neutral” stance was JUST as “neutral” as Donna Brazile’s, and we ALL know how THAT went…).

Clyburn’s support of Obama is considered quite the big deal since Clyburn is the Chair of the Black Caucus, the House Majority Whip, and is quite influential in the Congress. Hence what made his comments about Clinton all the worse, in my opinion (how DO the Clintons sleep at night with all the knives sticking out of their backs?!).

So why am I bringing up Jim Clyburn (besides the opportunity to say HE will never get my vote again, either)? Because our local paper, the Post and Courier, just had a VERY interesting story about him on Monday. Here’s the title, and this should give you a big ol’ clue: “Rep. Recent polls show that approximately 30% of Hillary voters could defect to McCain if Obama is the nominee. That such a large swath of Democratic voters might defect should be disconcerting to superdelegates, to say the least. I’ve been reflecting for several weeks on my own unease with Obama, a man who was once my second choice for president.

Last month I attended a Passover dinner and the conversation predictably turned to politics. (For those who don’t know, a Passover Seder is perhaps the first liberation theology ceremony, celebrating the Jewish people’s Exodus from slavery in Egypt).

One of my dinner companions was a computer salesman from New Jersey and an avid Obama supporter. I told him that Obama’s (largely) successful effort to paint the Clintons as racists had me doubting if I could vote for him if he were the nominee. He responded by saying that it was good politics and showed that Obama was willing to do whatever it took to win. (more…)

As Obama loses his grip on the nomination and the momentum of his candidacy slows, his campaign is reviving its race-baiting tactics heading into North Carolina.

We’ve seen this played out before: The Obama campaign hints that whites are unwilling to vote for Obama because he’s black, an Obama surrogate claims the Clintons are using race, and the Obamablogs, Keith Olbermann, and finally the MSM pick it up as “truth.”

The day after Clinton’s surprising victory in New Hampshire, Obama supporter Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. — in words which will live in infamy –said that Hillary’s tears in New Hampshire will “have to be looked at very, very carefully in light of Katrina and other things Mrs. Clinton did not cry for, particularly as we head toward South Carolina where 45 percent of African Americans will participate in the process.” (more…)

Bob Schieffer asked him about some recent missteps by President Clinton as he stumped for his wife on the campaign trail. What we heard this morning was the nice-guy version of David Axelrod. The cameras were running and pointed straight at him, so of course he was going to pretend he couldn’t possibly know what was in Bill’s head — or heart — when it came to the things he said on behalf of Hillary.

Schieffer: What do you think about it, Mr. Axelrod? Do you think any of this has been calculated or is he just making mistakes or…?

Axelrod: Well I can’t climb into President Clinton’s head and explain why he said some of the things he said - and some of them have been regrettable. But let me say this - his wife is running for President of the United States and he is working very, very hard to try and get her elected President and to some degree that’s understandable. And, uh, maybe some of these indiscrete remarks can be written off to the passion he feels about trying to get his wife elected president so, uh, I think it should be seen in that perspective.

I do think it’s important for everybody in the process whether they’re surrogates or the candidates themselves to be thoughtful about the things that they say because — words do have meaning and they can be disruptive and divisive and we don’t need that as a party and frankly we don’t need that as a country.
