The Three Blind Men and the Elephant: The New Yorker on Obama

The New Yorker magazine made a fundamental mistake when it decided to answer the question, Who Sent Obama?

They sent a 30-something New Yorker named Ryan Lizza to Chicago. And Chicago ate him for breakfast and never looked back.

Of course, as patient readers of Global Labor well know, we asked, and answered, the age old Chicago political question - Who Sent You? - back in April of this year and we updated it several times most recently on June 23. No mention of our work in the New Yorker - but that’s ok, they likely would have screwed it up anyway.

As we wrote then, the key to understanding Obama’s rise to power in Chicago politics is knowing which questions to ask, and of whom, and to understand why some will give you a straight answer while others will smile as broad as daylight at you and feed you a pile of horse manure. Lizza ate a lot of the latter. Now he wants you to eat it, too. Don’t be fooled.

Let’s just take apart one paragraph as an example, about the critical relationship between Barack Obama and Bill Ayers.

Obama-Rezko Redux

Barack Obama was recruited to become a community organizer in Chicago twenty years ago. After three years of doing this work, Obama realized that he could have far more influence in Illinois if he pursued a career in politics as had Chicago’s first black mayor, Harold Washington. In furtherance of this notion, Obama began to attend Harvard Law School.

During his third year at Harvard Law, Obama was offered a job by a Chicago real estate developer named Tony Rezko. Obama turned down this opportunity in order to become an attorney with the Davis, Miner and Barnhill law firm.

It was probably no coincidence that one of this firm’s biggest clients was Tony Rezko. The firm’s senior partner, Allison Davis, was also a power broker behind the rise of Harold Washington to the mayor’s seat in the city of Chicago—again, probably no coincidence as far as Obama was concerned.

Allison Davis subsequently left his law firm in order to go into the real estate development business full-time. He became a 51% owner of DV Urban Realty Partners along with Robert Vanecko who owned the remaining 49% of the firm. Vanecko is Chicago Mayor Richard Daley’s nephew. Two of Allison Davis’ sons, Jared and Cullen, work with their father in the real estate business.

Davis and his associates have received more than $100 million in taxpayer subsidies to build and rehab apartments and houses in Chicago. They have also been paid over $4 million dollars in development fees. As Tim Novak, a Chicago Sun-Times reporter, noted in a November 7, 2007 article for his paper, “Davis has gotten deal after deal from the mayor, helping to make him one of the Chicago’s top developers.”

In 1993, the same year he was hired by Davis’ law firm, Obama began serving on the board of Woods Fund, a Chicago charity foundation. After Allison Davis left his law firm, he went to the foundation for money and Obama voted to invest $1 million of the organization’s assets in a Davis real estate partnership. (more…)

Boston Globe Exposé, Part II: Barack Obama (D-Slumlord) Is Aloof, Oblivious, Dangerous

This is the second of a series of articles to be written on a lengthy exposé published in the Boston Globe entitled “Grim Proving Ground for Obama’s Housing Policy.” The 27 JUN 2008 investigative report is required reading for all No Quarter users. The editorial board of No Quarter finds the evidence cited in Binyamin Appelbaum’s article very compelling, and we will attempt to unpack it in a series of short essays to be published this weekend. The first installment of this series was published on Friday.

SusanUnPC in a 12 MARCH 2008 essay reproduced a map of 11 Rezko tenements in Barack Obama’s former state Senate district. The map originally appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times.

She cites the testimony of two residents of Rezko’s slums, and she notes how many of Rezko’s properties in Obama’s former state Senate district were either foreclosed, condemned or both. Because so many of Rezko’s dilapidated public housing structures are located in Obama’s former state Senate district, the Chicago news corps asked the aspiring Presidential candidate if he was aware of the squalor plaguing Rezko’s slum empire. Here is Obama’s response:

Still, he said it was “possible” that during his tenure in the legislature that a constituent may have written or called his office “saying, ‘We’re in a building, and we’re unhappy with the service here.’”

Such problems, he said, would normally be brought to the attention of an alderman or the city’s Housing Department. “Had I known that there were buildings that were in deteriorating or poor condition, that certainly would have given me pause. But I didn’t” know, Obama said.

Obama, in other words, equivocated: ”it is possible” he was aware of the financial and legal woes of Rezko’s slum landlord enterprise. But how do we square this statement with the following excerpts culled from the Boston Globe’s investigative report on Obama’s political and financial ties to major donors who made concerted efforts to defraud the Chicago public housing system? The Blood Money of Barack Obama’s Money Men

A little boy is dead because Barack’s key fundraisers cared more about profit than a safe environment for children. While his mother watched him to be sure he was safe, Curtis Cooper, a three-year-old boy riding his tricycle, was crushed to death by a heavy iron fence that suddenly fell over on top of him at a housing project run by Obama contributor Cullen Davis — whose family received huge government subsidies as well as a $1,000,000 grant for the properties from the Woods Fund’s board, whose members included Barack Obama and unrepentant terrorist William Ayers.

Curtis’ aunt Lisa Springfield said, “It just crushed him all up, his whole face.”

According to witnesses, five or six men rushed to the boy to try to pry the heavy fence off of him. An hour later he was pronounced dead at Children’s Memorial Hospital.

Cullen Davis, the son of Obama’s first boss and major benefactor Allison Davis, is a beneficiary of Obama’s prominent effort to privatize the management of public housing in Chicago. As Un coup de des wrote here yesterday in “Boston Globe Exposé, Part I: Introducing Cecil Butler, Obama’s West Side Slumlord Patron,” the privatization of this housing — while highly profitable for investors like Cullen Davis, Allison Davis, and the now-convicted Tony Rezko — has left residents with chronic plumbing failures that led to sewage throughout units and backing up into kitchen sinks, “collapsed roofs and fire damage,” rampant rodent infestation, vacant units, and the displacement of thousands of low-income residents because the buildings are either uninhabitable or have been destroyed in order to “gentrify” neighborhoods.

Obama Moves DNC Headquarters to Chicago

I heard the news, and was struck by the audacity of Obama moving the DNC headquarters and employees to the epicenter of machine and mob politics. Ben Smith of Politico.com wrote that the abrupt move is “a major shakeup” and, in an understated phrase, a “departure from tradition.”

I knew at once that Barack Obama was seizing the DNC by the hair, and dragging it into his lair where he can seize control of the Democratic party’s monies, its employees, and any access to its power brokers. The party is no longer, in any way, the party of the Democratic voter. It is now Barack Obama’s party, to do with as he wishes.

The Obama-controlled Chicago machine will hold sway over all Superdelegates running for reelection this year — including their access to money, support, and endorsements.

Those freshman House members will be kneeling and kissing Obama’s ring in no time and, for their sakes, they’d better not have supported Hillary.

Chicago is the home of Obama’s longtime extremist mentors, associates, advisers and benefactors — both before and immediately after his law school years — including Reverends Jeremiah Wright, Otis Moss and James Meeks; Minister Louis Farrakhan; Father Michael Pfleger; Weather Underground terrorists William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn; marketing guru David Axelrod who created the mix-and-match Obama and Deval Patrick personae; the convicted Antoin “Tony” Rezko who only two years ago enabled a “sweetheart deal” that allowed Barack and Michelle Obama to buy a historic mansion they could ill afford; the Illinois state senator power broker Emil Jones who “[f]or almost a year … used his position as leader of the state senate to block anticorruption legislation passed unanimously by the state’s lower house.”

Smith writes:

The move reflects Obama’s desire to maintain an unusually streamlined campaign, as well as his swift and complete takeover of a Democratic Party that isn’t always known for its unity.

Obama, We Are Smarter; We Follow the Money, and It Links You to Bill Ayers in the 1980s

SEN. OBAMA: George, but this is an example of what I’m talking about.
This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood, who’s a professor of English in Chicago, who I know and who I have not received some official endorsement from. He’s not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis.
And the notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago when I was 8 years old, somehow reflects on me and my values, doesn’t make much sense, George.
So this kind of game, in which anybody who I know, regardless of how flimsy the relationship is, is somehow — somehow their ideas could be attributed to me — I think the American people are smarter than that. They’re not going to suggest somehow that that is reflective of my views, because it obviously isn’t.

“I think the American people are smarter than that”. Well, Senator Obama, some are smart enough not to take your word for it but to investigate it. And what is revealed once again, as it was with Rezko and with Rev Wright: you lied! (more…)

Suddenly, now that CNN thinks they have gotten rid of Hillary Clinton so that they might have a weaker candidate for John McCain, the basting for the roast begins, just as predicted by anybody with a brain.

Suddenly discovering what we already have known about this pig for a year or longer, here’s CNN telling you what a dirty politician he really is.

Change and Hope? “No more politics as usual?” Indeed, Indeed, Indeed. What we have here is a Dirty Politician and a panderer. A bambzooler. A hoodwinker. A man who kills off whatever is in his way. A Chicago Thug, just like we all knew he was while CNN pretended not to notice.

Want Unity? Start By Condemning Hate-Speech

Ya know, I hear all this talk about wanting to bring our party together once our nominee is chosen at the convention in Denver, but when this latest in a long string of incidences of hate-speech crop up, all we get are more of the same half-assed statements (”deeply disappointed”) from camp Obama distancing himself from… (fill in the blank).

Howard Wolfson spoke to this issue in a statement yesterday, in which he noted that Obama has yet to condemn this guy…

“Divisive and hateful language like that is totally counterproductive in our efforts to bring our party together and have no place at the pulpit or in our politics. We are disappointed that Senator Obama didn’t specifically reject Father’s Pflegler’s despicable comments about Senator Clinton, and assume he will do so.”

Father Pfleger Should Save His Breath

Jake Tapper of ABC News reports:

Father Pfleger writes to say, “I regret the words I chose on Sunday. These words are inconsistent with Senator Obama’s life and message, and I am deeply sorry if they offended Senator Clinton or anyone else who saw them.”

Is this why the Obama campaign scrubbed Pfleger, one of Obama’s “spiritual advisors,” from their official webpage on faith? Did the Obama campaign ask Pfleger to apologize? Will Obama apologize to Clinton? Clinton personally apologized to Obama in the wake of Shaheen’s remarks in NH. (more…)
